Desperate to attract James after meeting only once, Alison reinvents herself as a Catholic despite her atheistic upbringing. After five years of marriage, however, she finds herself compelled to lead a double life, upholding ‘truths’ in public which she privately abhors. The strain of the deception leads her into an intense affair; yet perhaps more damaging will be the shocking knowledge that even the virtuous James is entangled in deception.
