"The Best 44 Scotland St. Book Yet"

I have read all of this series, have enjoyed them immensely, and find this to be the most enjoyable. The characters, as usual, are highly developed and seem to come to life. It's fun, too, having a history with these characters, and much of the plot is a continuation of their past exploits. I would carefully dole out my listening time because I didn't want to get to the end! The narrator is terrific. If you've never read any of these books, start with the first one.

    "Best AMS Book"

I have always thought of Alexander McCall Smith as his character, Angus Lordy, the portrait painter. In this book he paints his best, most emotional, most believable portraits. Bertie is one of the greatest characters I have ever read - a remarkable and tragic figure in a great comedy. But, if Bertie were the only portrait, that wouldn't explain the vast depth of character and feeling in this book.

Because it was published first as a serial, each chapter can be listened to independently, and there is a little punch line every 5 minutes or so to keep you going.

I think Alexander McCall Smith is a modern Charles Dickens. He is prolific. He writes serials. Most importantly, he is underrated for his time. I think people dismiss him as less than great art because his outlook is generally clean, positive and life-affirming, and he is fun to read. So what? Let the stuffies have their melancholy books. This one is great.

"Some of the very best stuff"

I have listened to all of Alexander McCall Smith's books and this has some of the best scenes of all of them. I thought the book started off a bit slow but after a while some of the scenes that came up are classics. Wait until you get to six-year-old Bertie alone in Paris!

    "enjoyable"

I loved the author's Ladies Detective Agency books, but this was the first in this series for me. At first I thought the little boy's character would prove to be too irritating for me to endure, but the narrator was so good that I ended up enjoying the book and would recommend it as a fun book.

    "A wonderful series--this one too!"

I love this tongue in cheeks series from Alexander McCall Smith. The characters are wonderfully drawn and you want to meet all of them. Smith is always insightul, with a dry humor that is always entertaining but never mean-spirited. This book is warmly written with soft characters you will remember. I loved all of the Scotland Street books and just downloaded Smith's latest: "The World According to Bertie." I can't wait to listen.

    "love this series"

44 Scotland Street was great. This is one in that series. You love the characters in this series, especially Bertie, the only one who really knows what is going on, And he is a child. If you like clever, easy going, pleasant, well written, and the foibles of others, you will love McCall Smith books. Never over the top, never excessive, just quietly wry and fun. I love these books. I hope you do too.

    "A wonderful discovery"

I love the Number One Ladies Detective series so much that I tried this book when it came up on sale. It was a little difficult to get into since it is not the first in the series, but I soon fell in love with all the characters. Bertie is a delight. And if I ever get another dog, I am naming it Cyril.

    "Thoroughly engaging as always."

If you love Bertie, you'll love this installment of the Scotland Street series. Written in such a way that you love all the characters and care what they are feeling. 3 cheers to Alexander McCall Smith.

    "Great fun!"

Is there anything this man writes that isn't good to great? He's a genius! I like this series better than those of The Number One Ladies Detective Agency, and that's saying a lot!
