Entertaining with limitations.

For fans of the Outlander series, the Lord John stories are a departure. However, Gabaldon writes with as much richness and development of principal characters in the Lord John stories as she does in the Outlander series. My only caveat is that the secondary characters in the Lord John series are, for the most part, not as richly developed as in Outlander. In this story in particular, I rather dislike having the villain dropped into the story at the very end as a bit of a throwaway, and with bare motive and character development.
The narrator does a fine job switching roles, although does play the female characters a bit like an over-the-top Hermione Gingold.

Miss Gabaldon always rights an engaging story

although I am a Diana Gabaldon fan true as they come, and Lord John stories are among my favorite, this one is not. There is a lot of background information that fits into the big books. There is a little more sexually explicit content in this book that does not interest me.

Fills in some blanks

Love Diana's books. The Lord John books and the other short books delve deeper into things learned in the Outlander series. I just love all of the aha discoveries. She has lots to bring together in the 9th Outlander book and I can't wait!

Jeff Woodman is the perfect Lord John!

I can listen to this story over and over. Diana Gabaldon is brilliant and Jeff Woodman is the perfect Lord John, and well as having distinct voices for the other characters. Well done!

Lord John is great

This is a great story by itself. But I also like getting to know characters that we see in the Outlander series. I am sure you will love this story also.

Diana Gabaldon gets better and better

I really enjoyed this book. Even having read An Echo In The Bone, I hadn't experienced Lord John as a fully realized character. Here, he is complex, commanding, sexy and sexual, and the narrator is fantastic. My only complaint was with the plot complexities, which left me baffled at the end. I couldn't remember who some characters were, and didn't understand their motivations. I also didn't care about the storyline involving John's father much. I was far more interested in Percy and John. Really liked Jamie's cameos and John's perspective on Hellwater and Geneva, which were far different than Jamie's in the Outlander series. In my opinion, the Outlander series has gotten better and better as the books have continued, with the characters gaining depth and shadows. This Lord John tome adds to the mix. Gabaldon has created a world I love dipping into vicariously!!
