Publisher's summary

From New York Times best-selling novelist Sharon Kay Penman comes the stunning story of a great medieval warrior-king, the accomplished and controversial son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine: Richard the Lionheart. A powerful tale of intrigue, war, and diplomacy, Lionheart plays out against the roiling conflicts of love and loyalty, passion and treachery, all set against the rich textures of the Holy Land.

Awful narration

I really enjoyed the first three books in the saga but the narration on this one is so jarring I can’t listen to any more. Her voicing of Elenor makes her sound like a character from a science fiction book and strong secondary characters sound whining. I’m going to pass on the rest of the series

story just ok and characters bland

Would you try another book from Sharon Kay Penman and/or Emily Gray?

I have read many books by Ms. Penman. She is a master of historical fiction. But this book felt more like a history text than fiction set in history. I enjoy when characters drive the story -- and with people who were so much larger than life like King Richard and his mother Eleanor of Aquitaine, there was so much room for characters to drive this tome. Unfortunately that didn't happen. I found Richard boring and even a bit whiny. Eleanor was bland and lacking her characteristic strength. Sadly, the character I found most interesting was Berengaria.

I hope that more of Ms Penman's books will be released on audio, but I cannot recommend that you spend your credits on this one.

Epic

A new Sharon Kay Penman book is like a fine wine-to be savored slowly and drawn out as long as possible to prolong the enjoyment. RIchard I definitely is a major player on the stage of Britain's monarchy. Penman creates a Richard that is sympathetic without being too unlike what we know of the real man.

Sharon K Penman on Audio!

Would you listen to Lionheart again? Why?

No. It was EXTREMELY long and enjoyable, but did I mention EXTREMELY long?

What did you like best about this story?

I really knew nothing about the Crusades and this has inspired me to learn more.

Held me hostage for 27 hours!

I love this author and can’t wait for the next one! The history of the crusades is so underscored in the high school classroom

Different version of Richard I’s story

This story, primarily taking place during the Third Crusade, shows a different version of King Richard’s tale than you typically get in Historical Fiction novels. The strained relationship between he and his wife is delivered in more detail, as is the politics behind various events during the Third Crusade. Battle scenes, while definitely included, were not particularly detailed and often huge historical battles were glossed over in just a few paragraphs.

In short, it’s a great story and if you’re interested in Henry II and his kind you should absolutely read this. Just be prepared for it to be a bit boring at times.

An absolute delight...

I don't do many reviews - only if I've been very impressed or very disappointed. This book really impressed me. The reader was superb. And the storyline engaging. -An absolute delight!

Why couldn't emily gray have just read the book

If she had just read the book, it would have been so much better..but she had to try to act and she's terrible at it. Her male voices, her French accent and most of the womens' voices were just horrendous. It was so distracting. I had read this book many years ago and thought I'd like to hear it because of all the foreign names that I never knew how to pronounce. It was great hearing them...I have all the audio books in this series and all the others were wonderful because she did not read them...I have one more to listen to in this series..and it's by her, also. So I'll be gritting my teeth through that one, too.
I really do enjoy Sharon Kay Penman's books, but will never buy another read by this person.

Interesting history and a great listen!

Gripping story that really illuminates the fascinating politics and personalities of mid-evil Europe leading up to and through the third crusade. Highly recommend.
