Publisher's summary

Throughout her blockbuster career, number-one New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult has seamlessly blended nuanced characters, riveting plots, and rich prose, brilliantly creating stories that "not only provoke the mind but touch the flawed souls in all of us" (The Boston Globe). Now, in her highly anticipated new book, she has delivered her most affecting novel yet - and one unlike anything she's written before.

For more than a decade, Jenna Metcalf has never stopped thinking about her mother, Alice, who mysteriously disappeared in the wake of a tragic accident. Refusing to believe that she would be abandoned as a young child, Jenna searches for her mother regularly online and pores over the pages of Alice's old journals. A scientist who studied grief among elephants, Alice wrote mostly of her research among the animals she loved, yet Jenna hopes the entries will provide a clue to her mother’s whereabouts.

Desperate to find the truth, Jenna enlists two unlikely allies in her quest. The first is Serenity Jones, a psychic who rose to fame finding missing persons - only to later doubt her gifts. The second is Virgil Stanhope, a jaded private detective who originally investigated Alice’s case along with the strange, possibly linked death of one of her colleagues. As the three work together to uncover what happened to Alice, they realize that in asking hard questions, they'll have to face even harder answers.

As Jenna's memories dovetail with the events in her mother's journals, the story races to a mesmerizing finish. A deeply moving, gripping, and intelligent pause-resister, Leaving Time is Jodi Picoult at the height of her powers.

Sobbing as I Write This

So, this novel is an emotional rollercoaster that I just did not want to get off. This just leapfrogged it's way to being one of the best novels I've read. I am a wildlife biologist and I still learned things I'd never known about elephants that were ensconced in beautiful, riveting prose. The ending is exquisitely crafted and leaves me crying but satisfied beyond what I had hoped for. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Surprise!

Quite the twist in this book. You have to accept certain unscientific belief. But once you have done that and immerse yourself in the story, it’s quite a fun mystery. Heartbreaking heartwarming at the same time.

Beautifully written and thoroughly enjoyed!

I am amazed at the beautiful writing and touching moments in this book. The narrators were phenomenal and I loved their voices for these characters. What a wonderful story of love, family and heartache. I have learned so much about elephants that I need to learn more. Thank you Jodi, for this wonderful lesson in grief, belief, and moving on. I will never forget this story.

Not what I expected!

Great book, quick read, interesting characters, and very well performed. I was hesitant to get this book because, quite frankly, the description of the book (a psychic? Elephants?) seemed so far fetched. The reviews drew me in, and I’m so glad that I took a chance on this one. This conclusion of this book was not at all what I expected, but I won’t give any more details. I also learned about something new & gained a new perspective on something. Well worth a “listen”!

Elephants never forget

I found this book informative about elephants and grief. The story maybe fictional but it’s obvious there was a lot of research put into it. I love that the elephants in the story are actual inhabitants of a sanctuary in Tennessee. #mystery #elephantsneverforget #tagsgiving #sweepstakes
