Publisher's Summary

Fred Secombe, a Church of Wales vicar, sings an old music-hall song at the election of a new bishop. Another new appointment is a curate, John Burton, whose wife is keen to establish relations with the community on the council estate.

The archdeacon, the venerable Titus Philips, continues a vendetta against the vicar, to the annoyance of his wife. As Rural Dean, it is his responsibility to deal with the death of a priest involved with drugs.

John Burton does sterling work on the council estate, and this prompts the vicar to begin more visiting in the parish. There, he attracts the attention of a young wife, and then the attention of her husband, who falsely accuses him of an affair.

What the Critics Say

"His [fictionalized] memoir of life as a Church of Wales vicar in a troubled parish in the 1960s will appeal to listeners who enjoy gentle tales of church-related life." (AudioFile)

    "I was very dispppointed"

I love British literary comedy, especially campus comedies and those set in rural parsonages and parishes, etc., so I downloaded this audio book eagerly. While the concept behind the narrative was amusing, some of the period details very interesting, the narrator charming, and the outlines of many of the characters promising, I found the pace and the dialog maddeningly slow. The dialog was so repetitious that I turned off the book many times in frustration and finally gave up on it with an hour left (The only audio book in 60+ that I did not finish).

I think if this had been edited one more time, it may have been a good listen/read, but I found it too plodding. P.G. Wodehouse or Andrew Davies or John Mortimer it is not! - Perhaps if my expectations had not been so high....

    "More like this!!!"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is the core of what Jan Karon's books are like. If you like Jan Karon, I think you will like this.

"enjoyable enough to listen multiple times"
Where does Leaves Must When the Devil Drives rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I enjoyed the characters, story and tone of this book and listened to it probably at least 3 times. I recommend Fred Secombe as an author and he does a first-rate job of narrating.

    Any additional comments?

I've listened to at least 4 additional Audible selections since reading this one, so I can't remember alot of detail.
