Publisher's summary

The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his 30th birthday. But no one knows about the early life of the Son of God, the missing years - except Biff, the Messiah's best bud, who has been resurrected to tell the story in this divinely hilarious yet heartfelt work, "reminiscent of Vonnegut and Douglas Adams" ( Philadelphia Inquirer).

Verily, the story Biff has to tell is a miraculous one, filled with remarkable journeys, magic, healings, kung fu, corpse reanimations, demons, and hot babes. Even the considerable wiles and devotion of the Savior's pal may not be enough to divert Joshua from his tragic destiny. But there's no one who loves Josh more (except maybe "Maggie," Mary of Magdalan) and Biff isn't about to let his extraordinary pal suffer and ascend without a fight.

Critic reviews

"Moore...gets style points for his wild imagination as Biff recalls his journey with Jesus...into and out of the clutches of Balthasar, then into a Buddhist monastery in China and finally off to India, where they dabble in the spiritual and erotic aspects of Hinduism. The author gets more serious in his climax, offering a relatively straightforward, heartfelt account of the Passion and Christ's final days that includes an intriguing spin on how the Resurrection might have happened." (Publishers Weekly)
"An instant classic...terrific, funny, and poignant." (Rocky Mountain News)

Very colorful but entertaining.

Narrator was great! The story definitely has a ton of theories but it's a great fictional religious story.

Thoroughly entertaining!

This book made for enjoyable commutes with a lot of chuckles. Fisher Stevens' narration was wonderful, with several of the characters being given very distinctive vocal personalities - maybe a bit stereotyped in some cases, but that just added to the fun.

Great audio version

I read this book years ago, loved it, and was happy to revisit without having to use my eyeballs. Still an excellent book that delivers some beautiful messages in a funny and irreverent way.

Fun and surprisingly thoughtful

This is one of my favorite Christopher Moore books. It's sometimes a little too offhanded, but altogether thoughtful. I'm not a religious person, but even if you were I don't find this an offensive interpretation. It may be a little coarse (not for young readers!), but overall I found it to be endearing. Definitely enjoyable.

Amazing for open minded readers!

If you're conservative Christian you may find this book to be sacrilegious. Go in with an open mind and you will absolutely love this book! Funny, witty, and overall enjoyable!

A movie contract should be considered!

Jesus a different tale

The story is about Jesus learning to be come the messiah through the eyes of his best friend. I though this book would take away Jesus integrity but it didn't really. He does get a little jealous but other than that he stays pretty clean. The mischief that Biff gets into will make you laugh and it is not clean. I would have enjoyed this more as a teenager yet still enjoyed it as a 30 something. It did not really have a slow spot. I really like Fisher Stevens and he did a great job reading.
