I have downloaded many of the Heyer audiobooks from audible and find this to be one of the best due in great part to the skill of the narrator. Eve Matheson does a bang up job of bringing these characters to life. I found myself listening to it again just a few days after I finished it the first time. I will definitely be downloading more books read by this narrator.
This isn't one of Georgette Heyer's best, but the dialog is so much fun that it made me laugh out loud. And the book is so well performed that it is definitely worth a listen.
This audible production is a fresh encounter with a very old friend, as I read and enjoyed this novel years ago. There was not a single jarring note in the performance, which makes it a rare pleasure indeed. Georgette Heyer is dependably excellent, and the narrator did a good job. I plan to work my way through the unabridged Heyer titles, and will look again for this narrator.
English major, Attorney then CEO of 5000 employee company (in that order). I have over 1200 books in my Audible library.
I love Georgette Heyer Regency Romance novels and Lady of Quality is a very good one. Annis is a srong likable heroine and the dialog between the two young people she is looking after is very spirited and funny. This is a great romance with a lot of passion that is protrayed so well withour graphic sex involved (which acually makes it even more enjoyable).
I would recommend reading this book rather than listening to the it. Eve Matheson's voice is lovely, and her narration is very enjoyable when her characters are understated, as in The Nonesuch. In Lady of Quality, her characterization is over the top and runs roughshod over Georgette Heyer's subtle humor. I was disappointed in the audiobook but recommend the printed and Kindle versions.
I was totally charmed by Georgette Heyer's The Unknown Ajax and Friday's Child but I found myself irritated and frustrated by Lady of Quality. I found the romance lacking and quite humorless. With Friday's Child I found myself chuckling and liking every character in that story (save the villain, of course). But the romance and comedy in Lady of Quality was almost non-existent. To top it all off, the character Maria made me want to scream. Eve Matheson is a wonderful narrator and I don't for a second blame her for Maria's annoying voice since I believe it is congruent with the character that Georgette Heyer wanted to portray. So I ask myself: Did I enjoy this story? Will I listen to it a second time? I answer with a resounding NO!
Annis, the Lady of Quality, is surrounded by the most aggravating, insipid, predictable group of characters I have ever had the misfortune of encountering. I finished the book feeling as if I had just escaped from an ant bed!!
I would certainly listen to it again. I've listened to it three times since I first purchased it.
The story is a solid romance, but also has lots of humour.
Three words are insufficient. Lovely in narrative, incredibly enervating when performing character dialogue. I really get annoyed by her character voices. They're so overdone and grating.
Miss Wychwood. She's clever and witty.
This is a great story, marred by the narrator's shocking characterisations, but still well worth having, as are all of Heyer's Regency novels.
Goergette Heyer books are a light but entertaining read. She brings to life her characters. Her heroines are ordinary women who are usually independant. I love romance novels that don't go straight to the sheets (thats not love, it's lust).
"Irritating Leading Man"
A fun story with the usual array of characters. Eve Matheson manages most of the characters very well ...especially Annis, but hugely lets the side down with her portrayal of Oliver Carleton. A pompous and bullish voice all the way through , which wiped away a lot of the Heyer Conversation magic. Very odd as she manages some of the others SO well.
Lady of Quality has always been one of my favourite Heyers, despite it being so similar to the plot of Black Sheep. Annis is an woman trying to be independent whilst keeping family relationships on an even keel, who finds herself attracted to an unpopular man. Specifically, one her over-protective brother Geoffrey dislikes intensely. That sounds trite and formulaic, but isn't.
I think the strength of Heyer's novels always lie not just in the main storylines but in the variety of strong supporting characters. In this the palm goes to Maria Farlow, Annis's tittering, judgemental chatterbox of a companion. Maria has the potential to be either very funny - or drive you nuts. In Eve Matheson's hands (or rather voice) she comes to life, at once both horrific and grotesquely funny.
I kept Lady of Quality back till late on in my journey through Heyer on Audible for a treat. I wasn't disappointed. Definitely recommended.
This is a fun story but the narration of the leading man is SO poor that I dreaded his appearance in the story. What a shame.
"Story good but narrations not for me"
One of my favourite Heyer novels. I really like Oliver Carleton and his dialogues with Annis. A blunt, matter of fact, no nonsence, tell it how it is man, who finds he has to mend his ways to win his "Lady". That's what makes the narration poor from my viewpoint. Ms Mathewson raises her voice every time he speaks to try to sound like a man, but it just appears that he is shouting - which he is not! He is forthright, blunt, argumentative but not always shouting. She needs to learn to deepen here voice, but keep it level to portray a gentleman. The book itself is an easy read/listen and the other characters all sound fine, especially the irritating Maria, who woud drive anyone she lived with mad. If you can live with Mr Carleton's voice, then give it a go.
"Not a lady of quality"
Not a good narration. Overdone. A waste of money, and I love Georgette Heyer books.
Eve Matheson manages all the of the characters particularly well. Her rendering of her companion, the appalling Maria is so good that you want to slap her! An excellent addition to my library of Heyer audiobooks.
