The modern dominican idiosyncrasy beautifully entangled between historical facts and human intimacies. It is hard not to think you are reading a real story due to the authenticity of the characters. The narrators definitely added to the richness of the experience.
The book is character-driven in a credible way. The light touch of magical realism works well. I liked getting a flavor of Dominical life and political strife.
The performances are excellent, they embody the story without overpowering it.
It's got pathos and bite- made me smile and wince.
I'll definitely read more Diaz.
I like sci-fi and fantasy as well as an occasional good mystery.
I couldn't finish. I can take a little foul language in a book, but it seemed like this had a curse word in every couple of sentences. some might like this, but not me. Jesus Martinez was fine as a narrator. I didn't get far enough to listen to Laura Gomez. Next!
