Publisher's summary

Autumn 1942. Hitler's legions have swept across Europe, France has fallen, Churchill and the English stand isolated on their island. In North Africa, Rommel and his Panzers have routed the British Eighth Army and stand poised to overrun Egypt, Suez, and the oil fields of the Middle East. With the outcome of the war hanging in the balance, the British hatch a desperate plan: send a small, highly mobile, and heavily armed force behind German lines to strike the blow that will stop the Afrika Korps in its tracks.

Steven Pressfield brings to life the flair, agility, and daring of this extraordinary historical commando unit, the Long Range Desert Group. He describes in detail the tactics, weaponry, and specialized skills needed for combat under extreme desert conditions. He captures, too, the camaraderie of this "band of brothers" as they perform the acts of courage and cunning crucial to the Allies' victory in North Africa. As in his acclaimed earlier novels, Pressfield combines historical accuracy and edge-of-your-seat battle scenes to create riveting fiction.

Critic reviews

"Crisp writing carries readers through success, failure and a final face-to-face encounter with Rommel that's no less exciting for knowing the outcome." ( Publishers Weekly)

This is fiction not a memoir.

An ok story, worth a listen. But note the author goes to great lengths to present this as a memoir of a young officer in the Africa Core of WW2, based upon his diary.

Only at the end does the narrator lets us know its historical fiction. So don’t waste your time trying the google interesting detail like me. I tried to google the Stein book referenced in the text, thinking it would be interesting to read. The author sure fooled me.

Killing Rommel

Steven Pressfield is, without a doubt, one of the best story tellers of our time. Books like "Gates of Fire" and "Killing Rommel" are the gold standard stories of our time. "Killing Rommel" hits the mark perfectly. Impressive story and equally impressive story telling.

Real? Read as though it was.

Alfred Molina's reading, dealing with multiple accents, British, New Zealander, Australian, German, provided a great platform on which to ground the story.

Pressfield's frame in a frame made me wonder more t han once, is it real? Did Chap exist?

Wonderful details of culture and life at that time. No details overused.

WAY WAY better than the title

I only got this book because it was in my plus catalog. I can’t say how much I enjoyed it. The type of book where I went online to do some research. Highly recommended.

Fascinating.

This is a must read WW2 story. Adventurous, exciting, and engrossing. The writing and descriptions are so good, the reader (or listener) is thoroughly immersed, and will feel as if he or she is there, trolling through the North African desert as both predator and prey. Further, this narrator is excellent, second only to Humphrey Bower.

Amazing story.

“Greatest Generation” hardly pays tribute to the will of man at war. Humble warriors with brutal memories.
Well Done.

Excellent Book, Excellent Reading

An amazing story. I thoroughly enjoyed this Audiobook. For anyone who loves historical fiction, this is excellent. There are not only the rich details of life in the WWII North Africa Campaign, but profound messages about maintaining your humanity in the midst of war. The audiobook reading is also excellent and lends a dimension to the story you might not get from reading the book.

Loved It

What a terrific book, which brings to light both history and personality.

A rare gem! I can't recommend this highly enough to anyone who enjoys war stories.

I am somewhat a WWII buff, and this book brought so many tidbits and interesting facts and story lines to light that it kept me riveted.
