Publisher's summary

Autumn 1942. Hitler's legions have swept across Europe, France has fallen, Churchill and the English stand isolated on their island. In North Africa, Rommel and his Panzers have routed the British Eighth Army and stand poised to overrun Egypt, Suez, and the oil fields of the Middle East. With the outcome of the war hanging in the balance, the British hatch a desperate plan: send a small, highly mobile, and heavily armed force behind German lines to strike the blow that will stop the Afrika Korps in its tracks.

Steven Pressfield brings to life the flair, agility, and daring of this extraordinary historical commando unit, the Long Range Desert Group. He describes in detail the tactics, weaponry, and specialized skills needed for combat under extreme desert conditions. He captures, too, the camaraderie of this "band of brothers" as they perform the acts of courage and cunning crucial to the Allies' victory in North Africa. As in his acclaimed earlier novels, Pressfield combines historical accuracy and edge-of-your-seat battle scenes to create riveting fiction.

Critic reviews

"Crisp writing carries readers through success, failure and a final face-to-face encounter with Rommel that's no less exciting for knowing the outcome." ( Publishers Weekly)

Amazing!

This is one of the rare gems of historical fiction. If you like O'Bryan and Bernard Cornwell you will love Pressfield. Narration is on par with Patrick Tull! I could not stop listening.

Very interesting read

Being an American, i didn't appreciate Britain's North African campaign against Rommel. Pressfield does a great job bringing the story to life as usual. He can always be counted on to do so. The narration was very well done as well. A highly recommended read.

Great Book! Great Performance!

During the entire reading I felt like I was on patrol with the Long Range Desert Group deep behind enemy lines. Meticulous detail and a great performance. Having a map of the North African campaigns within reach as you listen makes it even better as you follow the patrol through the desert in search of The Desert Fox!

Brew up some tea and hold on for the ride!

An amazing story that puts you in the driver's seat of a LRDG truck out on patrol in the middle of the vast desert of North Africa during WWII. Having had a small glimpse of desert warfare myself while filming for the army during Desert Storm and in Iraq, what the men of the LRDG and SAS endured and accomplished is mind boggling. These were ordinary men doing extraordinary things. The author and the narrator of this audio book bring you into the middle of this band of warriors. A must read or listen to for anyone.
