Junky | [William S. Burroughs]

Junky

Burroughs' first novel, a largely autobiographical account of the constant cycle of drug dependency, cures, and relapses, remains the most unflinching, unsentimental account of addiction ever written. Through time spent kicking and time spent dealing, through junk sickness and a sanatorium, Junky is a field report from the American post-war drug underground. It has influenced generations of writers with its raw, sparse and unapologetic tone.

    "Love this book"

First off, I hate Naked Lunch. Maybe the worst book I've ever read. Burroughs is one of those writers you feel like you're supposed to like, then you read Naked Lunch and decide for yourself its all academic snob hype and nothing more. Junky is a different beast altogether. Junky is very blunt, very well-written. It transports you back in time very easily to the 1950's. It falls into line with On the Road, but to me is the darker, brooding kid brother. Narration on this is great. If you hated Naked Lunch, give this a shot (in the arm).

    "A playful yet serious read"
What would have made Junky better?

Nothing would of made this story better. The way that the narrators spoke was kind of fun and lightened the fact that the book was about addiction which made it not such a serious read about drugs but still a good read.

If you’ve listened to books by William S. Burroughs before, how does this one compare?

I have never read one of his books before.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It was just a little light of a book for me...I like books that are more in depth and graphic and specific.

    Any additional comments?

It's an American classic. If you consider yourself well-read this really should be on your list.

"a great book that audible has killed."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

anybody that can put their hands on this book will learn something about a world next door

What was one of the most memorable moments of Junky?

that i paid for it, downloaded it but never got it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes, if i only could figure out how to get it from audible

    Any additional comments?

I am a Mac-usaer, but for the time being I use a PC. I bought 20 credits, but only got hold of 4. Audible has failed totally as the confusion on the webpage is a killing bore. I gave up. Goodbye.
