Following the death of her bullying husband, Etta Bancroft's selfish children move her to a village in the Cotswolds. One night, she discovers a filly, left to die in the snow. With help, Etta rescues the horse, and she and her friends form a syndicate to pay for her upkeep. As the horse recovers, she begins to show racing pedigree, so the syndicate enters her into a maiden hurdle - and are shocked at the result.

A book for animal lovers.
Some terribly over the top bedroom scenes.
Dora Belvedon is performed as a great combination of jolly hockey sticks enthusiasm and gutter journalist.
The book goes for 27 hours!
Jilly Cooper is low-brow fiction, but she has a huge heart. Nothing is more important to her than human kindness.
Yes. A great, fun story.
Maybe condense it a little. It was long.
The performance was great.
Yes plenty of laughs.
Hot romance/Sci Fi we're so lucky to have Audible to feed our book addictions. I love walking my precious dog Sydney & listening to my books
As always with Jilly Cooper storyies it was fun to read and kept me interested right till the end. Very enjoyable.
After years of refusing to read Jilly Cooper after having friends reccomend it to me, I was suprised at how much I enjoyed this. Well narrated, and what a bunch of characters. But I particularly liked how the animals were bought to life in this novel.
This was quite a long audio book but it was never dull. There were lots of characters some sweat, some sexy, some obnoxious. Gerri Halligan did a good job with the voices making it a very easy book to listen to.
"Do not buy this"
I believe i have read every Jilly Cooper novel. I have been disappointed over the years as they deteriorated, but there was still an element of fun in them. This one has nothing. Absolutely nothing. The characters are more unbelievable than ever, they have no charm, and there is no delight to be had in meeting them. There is not one redeeming feature in this book. I'm not sure that i even managed to get to the end, as i fell asleep for a while, it became so monotonous and boring. There seemed to be nothing but ill will throughout the book. If i can find a way to wipe it out of my Audible library, i will do so, as it is an embarrassment to keep seeing it there. Please do not waste your money on this book when there are so many others to choose from.
"If you enjoyed "Riders" buy this !"
Having greatly enjoyed the unabridged version of one of my old favourites Jilly Cooper's 'Riders' I was delighted to see her latest novel available by the same excellent narrator just before my holiday. It didn't disappoint - some great new characters and plenty of old ones and a brilliant story line - an ideal holiday companion. If you enjoyed 'Riders' I would highly recommend you buy this. Now we just need the rest of the unabridged Jilly back catalogue to come to Audible - 'Rivals' for starters please !
I have only got as far as end of book one and cannot bear to listen to anymore of this rubbish! Reams of boring description about boring people and their even more boring, stereotypical lives.
"jump to it and listen to it"
I am a die hard copper fan yet this is one of her best. Escapism at its most marvellous.
"Inside scoop on the racing fraternity"
It is a lightweight amusement.
While I enjoyed listening to this book, well read with distinguishable voices, it is a lightweight read (or listen) with rather foreseeable conclusions and no real surprises. A pleasant way to pass the time.
This was an absolutely brilliant book - and although it was very long it kept me riveted as I needed to find out what happened to each of the characters who became very real during the storytelling. Gerri Halligan is an excellent narrator who made each of the characters come alive - am looking forward to listening to more narrations by her.
As usual Jilly Cooper knows how to thrill and excite the reader/listener
"jolly good Jilly"
I hadn't read A Jilly Cooper novel for years until this year and downloaded this as an audio book to listen to on holiday in France. What a joy to listen to a story about an older woman as the central character who still has feelings and needs! Yes their is sex in the story but not overloaded as in some new books this year and there was truly feel good story. It was pure joy to listen to whilst sipping my vino! Ishall download more JC for next years trip to France.
This is more like a squeal book to her other book, Riders. It seems to follow on and have the same sort of scenes but with different characters. Again, lots of sexual scenes as the book progresses which include the same type of format as 'Riders'. Etta is portrayed really well and I enjoyed getting to know her character more and more but I did want to slap her son and daughter in law in the face! lol! It didn't really hold my attention as I felt it was far too similar to 'Riders' and much too predictable.
"Go Mrs Wilkinson!!!"
It drives my sister nuts when I read/listen to books out of order, and having only been able to find the first Jilly Cooper here (Riders), I gather I've missed a lot of background; however, I thoroughly enjoyed this and didn't feel like I missed out on a good story.
Eta has a philandering husband and two awful children, when the husband dies, the kids soon nab all the best antiques, and sell off the house, making Eta a glorified nanny to the nightmare grandkids. Eta finds a badly abused horse and fearing her son will make her put her down, nurses her back to health with the help of a few local pals.
I loved the sense of community in this book as everyone from the pub/school/stables etc pitched in to help the horse, Mrs Wilkinson, get better. As usual with J Cooper, there was a lot of bonking going on with various couples, and you will find it difficult not to shout out at Eta's son for treating her with such contempt. Great book.
"Pure lightheard fun"
In a world obsessed by doom, gloom and the economy this book made me both laugh outloud and cry a little. Such an endearing tale with one or two twists. I loved it and didn't want it to end. Gina
