Publisher's summary

Jimmy knows he's different from the other teenagers in Piney Grove, Georgia. He's what people call "slow", which means he doesn't always understand what he sees and hears. But Jimmy sees and hears a lot, even the occasional angel. And Jimmy remembers it all with uncanny accuracy, which is why his lawyer father asks him to testify in a trial. Jimmy's testimony saves the man from jail but has far-reaching consequences for himself and the people he loves.

Peopled with a cast of Southern folk at once familiar and unexpected, Jimmy is an extraordinary tale about growing up in the midst of real struggle. Like Mark Twain and Harper Lee, Robert Whitlow uses an innocent's limited viewpoint to illuminate complex human realities, and to touch the heart. From the first encounter with Jimmy to that last bittersweet goodbye, Jimmy will enthrall and delight.

Tough one to review

The book “Jimmy” was difficult for me for several reasons. The story is narrated by the author and while he does a pretty good job, it’s just not quite as dramatic as it could have been. The story seemed somewhat detached and under-developed in some places. There needed to be more about the Watchers. We liked Jimmy, we loved Jimmy. But who has as bad a luck as Jimmy? I absolutely, 100%, hated the ending. I wanted more from the author. I still want more from him. I’m just really sad.

Great story. Love how the narrator/author uses inflection in his voice. Worth your time and money.

Good story...

...but the author should have stuck to writing and left the narrating to the pros.

Wonderful story!

People miss a lot of sweet goodness when they abort a "handicapped" child. This book is a great listen and touched my heart. I have a boy in my family with Lowes syndrome and he is the JOY of our lives!! Thank you Robert, for such a great story.

Preachy

This is a nice story, about a nice little boy. I am confused as to wether. it was written for a young audience. At times it had a very heavy religous preachy attitude. I enjoyed it despite the ending. (And the preaching)

Upsetting

Well developed story and it is impossible not to love Jimmy. The ending was so very upsetting and so sad that it left me wishing I had never read this book.
