Publisher's Summary

Born and raised in a poor, working-class family in Toronto, Jack Spayd is the son of an unhappy marriage. After being taken under the wing of "Miss Frostbite", the owner of a local jazz club, Jack becomes a gifted musician, playing piano and harmonica. Fame and the allure of gambling takes him to Vegas, and prospects of fortune take him to the Belgian Congo, where he's heard it's possible to earn big money working in the most dangerous parts of the local copper mines.

Jack of Diamonds is the story of a young, talented man, fighting to achieve his ambitions, and having to use his considerable talents to find his way in a perilous world.

"Plot is familiar but still good"

Jack of Diamonds has a plot that borrows heavily from other Courtenay books, especially elements of The Power of One and The Persimmon Tree. However, it was still an exceptional listen! Courtenay was an amazing storyteller.

    "A Canadian story!"

I don't often run across a book that is about a Canadian. I think most writers think Canada is boring. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about places Jack went to in this book. Moose Jaw is a very interesting city. Home to Al Capone when he was hiding out. Jack's story is intriguing and kept me listening into the wee hours of the morning. Give this book a listen you won't be disappointed.

I don't usually rush out for all the "best sellers", but give each intriguing book/author a look. I have found many diamonds in the rough.

    "Great epic"

I loved this epic. Bryce Cortenay is an excellent story teller and Humphrey Bower did an amazing job narrating. The voices and different dialects helped bring these interesting characters to life.

    "Live another life"

As always, Courtenay has written a story so detailed, you can smell, see and hear the story unfold as if you were standing beside Jack. In fact, it's hard to believe Courtenay's books are not all autobiographies. It broke my heart at the end, when he said his "use by" date was fast approaching, and gave a brief plot line of the book he had planned as a sequel. Humphrey Bower did his usual excellent job, and surprised with his mastery of different accents, so there was always no doubt who was speaking.
