Publisher's Summary

Born and raised in a poor, working-class family in Toronto, Jack Spayd is the son of an unhappy marriage. After being taken under the wing of "Miss Frostbite", the owner of a local jazz club, Jack becomes a gifted musician, playing piano and harmonica. Fame and the allure of gambling takes him to Vegas, and prospects of fortune take him to the Belgian Congo, where he's heard it's possible to earn big money working in the most dangerous parts of the local copper mines.

Jack of Diamonds is the story of a young, talented man, fighting to achieve his ambitions, and having to use his considerable talents to find his way in a perilous world.

    Story
"May Bryce Courtenay rest in peace"
If you could sum up Jack of Diamonds in three words, what would they be?

    Loveable, noble, sad.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Jack

What does Humphrey Bower bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Brings the characters alive without any corny accents

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, made me sad due to the death of Bryce Courtenay a week after the release of the book

    Any additional comments?

May Bryce Courtnenay rest in peace with his son (April Fools Day) knowing that all Australians will remember him for his great works and his contribution to society

I simply adore Bryce Courtenay's books. His writings tell stories you love. Leaving you want more. After enjoying many of Bryce's other titles Jack of Diamonds was even better than I anticipated. Thank you. P.S. Humphrey is an incredible reader😳

    "Live another life"

As always, Courtenay has written a story so detailed, you can smell, see and hear the story unfold as if you were standing beside Jack. In fact, it's hard to believe Courtenay's books are not all autobiographies. It broke my heart at the end, when he said his "use by" date was fast approaching, and gave a brief plot line of the book he had planned as a sequel. Humphrey Bower did his usual excellent job, and surprised with his mastery of different accents, so there was always no doubt who was speaking.

    "Rather grueling"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I couldn't finish this. I do not need to know every meal someone eats and every stitch of clothing they wear. I like long, detailed books, but this one began to wear at me. I kept waiting for it to pick up and started getting annoyed.

Would you ever listen to anything by Bryce Courtenay again?

I'm not sure. I did listen to one of his books before this one and it was fine.

Did Humphrey Bower do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

The narration was fine, but began to gruel on with the every-so-slow story.
