When I clean, drive or exercise I listen to romance. The steamier the better but it must have a great story as well!

    "Classic Susan Elizabeth Philips"

What I love about Susan Elizabeth Phillips is that you are guaranteed a story that is charming, funny and sexy. She has a great way of making the reader feel like they are in the story. This book was entertaining and great to listen to. This book is the first in the "Chicago Stars" series. I listened to them out of order but each story can stand on its own. It was good however, to where it all started. Phoebe is such full of life yet lacks confidence due to her bad history with men. I think many women can relate in one way or another with her story. This was a heartwarming enchanting story and I would list it as one of my favorites by this author.

"Romance & Football - Somehow it works..."

The plot is predictable, but the narration is excellent (Anna Field never disappoints) and the romance is quite...um, effective. A fun, frolicking story about a dysfunctional family, an evil cousin, a woman battling childhood abuse to come into her own in the middle of the most unlikely environment: the locker room of a football team fighting their way to the Superbowl. The romance is well written and well read. Not high literary material, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

"One of SEP' top two books ever!"

I have listened to this book a number of times, and it never disappoints. I adore the main characters, and this is a fantastic start to Phillips Chicago Stars series. I hope she continues it!

    "Wonderful, delightful, chuckle out loud"

Loved this book from the very beginning. Shortly after "meeting" Dan Calebow, I never could seem to get the picture of Matthew Mcconnaughey out of my mind, so there he stayed, as Dan, for the entire time I listened to Anna Fields' excellent narration. It was a fun romp (and there were several descriptive "romps") and, as usual, great character development.

    "Awesome Listen!"

This was the first SEP book I listened to. The book was hilarious and her characters are all so great. I have since downloaded most of her Chicago Stars books (all but 1 - havent gotten around to it yet). I love the narrator and all her voices. The stories are engaging and funny and full of love. I've read 2 of her books and listened to most of them...they're all lighthearted and a great way to pass time whether youre driving in traffic, doing chores, or working out. It will definitely keep you smiling and sometimes have you bursting out laughing. It doesnt get dull, and sometimes you feel that familiar tug on your heart strings that we readers/listeners of romance or chick lit novels love! I recommend you download the books in order. This is the first book of her Chicago Stars series. They dont need to be read/heard in order, but its more fun that way since she introduces the characters that she uses in her next book in the one prior to it. The next book is titled Heaven Texas in case anyone is wondering.

"Don't judge a book by the cover."

I like the writing, the characters are vivid and real, but with all that I almost turned it off because of some sex scenes. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed this book and am glad I stuck it out, but the fact that the hero was very rough with the heroine (he thought she wanted it because of his ex-wife) was messed up. The heroine had a huge hang up with a rape that happened when she was a kid and then even after all that happened between them she still went back to him for more. Lucky for her he really wasn't that type of guy otherwise she would have been in a world of hurt. I would have told him to F off, but then there wouldn't have been a story. After all that major miscommunication was out of the way I started enjoying the book. There was some laugh out loud parts but the story is not a humorous kind, more a trump of life. In the end it all works out and I will continue with the series. Narrator was good.

    "Change of heart"
Would you consider the audio edition of It Had to Be You to be better than the print version?

Didn't read the print version, loved the audio version

What was one of the most memorable moments of It Had to Be You?

When Phoebe was mistaken for Dan's ex-wife at the beginning of an intimate fantasy.

Which character – as performed by Anna Fields – was your favorite?

    Phoebe

If you could take any character from It Had to Be You out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Phoebe, because she has a depth that most people wouldn't take the time to get to know. Once again , the outer package doesn't match the person's heart.

    Any additional comments?

As with many audio books, the narrator makes the difference between a good listen and a poor one. Ms. Fields was one of the best in the business and her loss is greatly mourned. With this series of books ( and I would recommend these to everyone) you might start out disliking the male character as a sexist idiot, but in the end , you grow to love the man they become. I have listened to this series several times and will listen to it again and again.

    "Refreshingly Different..."

Even though it was written over a decade ago, this is still a refreshingly different kind of romance novel. Phoebe is unlike any heroine I've read about before or since and she taught me a lot about how we categorize people based on very limited information. Kudos to Susan Elizabeth Phillips for creating a character and a situation that was so wholly unexpected and a lot of fun to read.

"Never thought I'd like a book about sports but..."

Overall, I thought this was a charming love story. Susan Elizabeth Philips has made the chemistry between Dan & Phoebe palpable without making the story solely (or even mostly) about sex. The best thing about their love story is that they both have issues that the other person helps them work through. The dialogue between the various characters (Dan, Phoebe, a teenage sister, & numerous football players) is witty, funny, & playful. And while this is obviously a romance novel, there are enough sub-plots occurring so that this book should be able to easily keep your interest. Anna Fields does a great job as narrator. Sometimes the voices she adopts for minor characters can be a bit awkward, but that's rare and understandable.

However, I do have to issue one word of caution. A couple of the scenes between Dan & Phoebe can be a bit disturbing. Misunderstandings, miscommunication, & baggage from past relationships lead to situations where the author--in my opinion--flirts a little to closely with rape. Based on the storyline, you can tell Phillips did this on purpose, but it's still a bit much.

    "Misleadingly overrated"

A book that has a 4.5 star rating should be much better than this one. The author goes to great lengths to give the main character a horrible past with PTSD, and then it's "all better" from meeting the right guy? Nope.
