Publisher's Summary

It's Dan Calebow's worst nightmare: Phoebe Somerville, a trendy New York knockout, inherits the Chicago Stars, the football team he coaches. And she wants to help him run it. Phoebe's sure he needs her. He's a sexist good-ol'-boy jock with a one-track mind. Surely she can straighten him out....So why should each find the other attractive? Call it the competitive urge, but these two stubborn people play the game for keeps.

"Did I listen to the same book?"
    Any additional comments?

While my first SEP book experience was positive, I expected a light, fun listen after reading the previous reviewers comments and the book synopsis. True, there were some funny scenes, and some sexy ones as well; however, I found the book mainly dealt with the way Phoebe handled an unresolved trauma in her teen years, changing her life and, to some extent, her personality, in order to deal with it. I am undecided if I will be getting the rest of the series.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have recommended this book. I love sports and romance so this series is perfect. I've listened to all of the Chicago Stars series and enjoyed all of the books.

Which character – as performed by Anna Fields – was your favorite?

    Phoebe

    "Ho Hum"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No. Fortunately, I listened while I did other tasks so I didn't waste my time. If I had picked it up to read (as opposed to listening), I would have put it down within the first dozen pages. I just hate to waste good credits spent.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I am listening to "Gone Girl," another well-rated book that I am not enjoying as much as I had hoped.

Was It Had to Be You worth the listening time?

    Not really.

    Any additional comments?

I am always surprised when I choose a book based on the reviews and I am so disappointed. Unfortunately, I had previously downloaded a later book in this series and now I need to decide if it is worth my time to listen to it or just "forfeit" the credit I spent on it.

    "Dan and Phoebe are great"

This is one of my favorite romances, and it sets the foundation for the whole Star series. Try to read the books in order because it really enhances the enjoyment for the series.
Dan and Phoebe's love story is so good that I find myself rereading this whole series. It is such luscious escape. The best part is each book is just as good as the previous one. S.E.P.'s writing is funny, heart warming with great characterization. If you like romances, this one is an all time winner. And the voice of
Anna Fields that was so much associated with S. E. P 's books so sadly has been quieted. Truly a great talent was lost when Ms. Fields tragically died.

    "Can't Go Wrong Here!"

I am a big fan of Susan Elizabeth Phillps. Found the first book just by chance and have loved four more since - this being #5. Funny, romantic and this one has a bit of of mystery to it too. I love that her books has real people and not all are rich, powerful and beautiful. Even those that are aren't perfect. If you like SEP books, especially those surrounding the "Chicago Stars", this is a real winner.

    "So disappointed"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This could have been a lot better if it hadn't been so smutty - I read MMIYC and Natural Born Charmer and some other SEP books, which I remember liking - I then bought Fancy Pants and It Had To Be You, and was sorely disappointed. To read these seemed to me a definite and unexpected step into bodice ripper territory.

What was most disappointing about Susan Elizabeth Phillips’s story?

I was equally disappointed by the lack of wit I remember from other books by SEP. The story also seemed to be brewed on largely the same ingredients as at least two of her other books.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrator does a good job, as in the other books, but she will forever sound like someone a bit older than the main characters. I am not put off by it though.

    "Best of the best"

After every SEP book, I always think "this was the best one ever". As far as I know, she has never written a so-so book -- they are all the terrific. Just thinking about some of the scenes she creates makes me laugh out loud.

    "Wow!"

I am not an avid reader. But, since finding books on CD, I can't get enough!! Susan Elizabeth Phillips is amazing. This is the second of her books I have "read" and I can't get enough. "It Had to be You" is a wonderful love story. I can't wait to download the next!!
