Publisher's summary

For Jacob and Daniel, two young gay men aboard a US Navy ship in WWII, the risks are high. Not only the risks of injury and death from Japanese planes and submarines, but the risk of discovery. Only a special kind of love is worth taking that chance. But from the moment Daniel meets Jacob's eyes across a battle-scarred deck, he knows he has to try. Being together requires figuring out what it means to be gay in an era when they could be discharged, imprisoned, or worse for admitting the desires of their hearts. Their relationship is measured in stolen moments and rare days of precious leave, with no guarantee there will be a tomorrow. And, if they survive the war, they will need even more luck to keep their love alive through the years to come.

This novel was written as part of the Goodreads M/M Romance Group's 2012 Don't Read in the Closet writing event: Love is Always Write. It won the 2012 LGBT Rainbow Award for Best Gay Historical Romance in 2012 and has been rated by more than 1,300 users on Goodreads with an average rating of 4.41 stars.

PHENOMENAL!

Any additional comments?

I almost made a enormous mistake. Because when I was offered a chance to read this story I almost said no because it’s a little outside my usual preferred romance genre era. And that would have been an mistake of gigantic proportion because this book slayed me in all the best ways.

Covering sixty-nine years of friendship, loyalty, and love this story uplifted me, broke my heart a little, then mended it, then filled it up. I love these characters so much.

I don’t know if it was Kaje Harper’s beautiful writing or Kaleo Griffith’s truly phenomenal narration or a combination of the two, but I loved this from start to finish. I was engrossed, enraptured and riveted throughout the entire story.

I haven’t listened to Kaleo Griffith before this audio, but I can assure you I will be grabbing something else of his after this. He takes these characters across their sixty-nine year relationship and ages their voices brilliantly. Do you know how hard that is to do? Believe me, I’ve heard a lot of narrators screw it up, but Griffith does it seamlessly. His performance was pure brilliance.

I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Wonderful story and excellent performance

I loved this story so much, that after reading the award winning free ebook, I bought the audio book and I am really glad I did; it really brought the story to a new level of greatness. This is the story of Daniel and Jacob; two men who were part of the "Greatest Generation" and who happen to be gay. They meet in 1942 while both are serving in the Navy. They get to know each other and fall in love while not only navigating the perils of WWII, but trying to avoid being caught during a time that their love would lead then to prison. The story follows their lives from 1942 - 2011; so even though it is labeled as historical, it is also a very contemporary romance. Kaje Harper is one of my favorite authors and this story demonstrates why. She can weave such wonderful three dimensional characters that fully draw you into the story and makes you feel everything these men feel; humor, romance, fear, and anger, but mostly hope and love. For the audio book she got the most amazing narrator to perform this story. This is the first time I have listened to this vocal artist, but he brings the performance these men and this story deserves. I HIGHLY recommend both the e book and the audio book.

A love story for the ages

I defy anyone to read or listen to this story without shedding a few tears. I remember the terrible 50s and 60s for the gay community. I could never understand it, but I remember it vividly. Couples like this made it, but it wasn't easy. Everyone should have a love like this.

So very enjoyable

I usually prefer stories with a tighter time span not ones that take place over decades and decades. But I should’ve known if anyone could pull it off it’s Kaje Harper. She’s a stellar author and this was an engaging listen.

Jacob and Daniel meet as Navy Seamen during World War II, a time that was definitely not gay-friendly. They explore their desires but worry what being outed would do to their lives.

Historical stories don’t always do it for me because the danger of same sex attraction is either made to seem less of a deal than it was or the characters are in placed in over dramatic events to bring them together. However, that’s not what happened here. Harper obviously did her research because the setting is very realistic. Jacob and Daniel are placed in a true life or death situation that was true to the setting and fit the era perfectly.

They do end up together, of course, and we get to see many aspects of their lives together as they age. The coming out issues also fit the era spot on.

Harper did an amazing job here. These characters are so true to life that I felt like I could easily run into these guys on the street. Jacob and Daniel are amazing characters that will stay with me for a long time.

This was an amazing love story spanning several decades. You get to see these guys going from attraction to love to living together to dealing with family issues and so much more.

Another great story by Harper.

Narration Review:

Kaleo Griffith did a very good job with this narration. He nailed the voices for Jacob and Daniel and even gave Jacob a good Jersey accent. This is a narrator I would gladly listen to more of.

Beautiful Saga

Into Deep Waters is an incredibly beautiful love story of two servicemen meeting on board ship during WWII moving through their life and ending with their legal marriage in their 80s. This is a free download on Amazon so download it first then get the audio for $1.99. I read the ebook a few months back and really liked it but now after having heard this audio version I absolutely LOVE it. This narrator was perfect. He brought the whole story to life and God the feels!!!! It's everything you'd want in a story and performance. Now all it needs is to be put to movie format for the trifecta.
