Publisher's Summary

Ralph Roberts has an incurable case of insomnia, but lack of sleep is the least of his worries. Each night he stays awake, Ralph witnesses more of the odd activity taking place in Derry after dark than he wants to know.

The nice young chemist up the street beats his wife and has delusions about beings he calls "The Centurions". A madman with a knife is trying to kill him, he's sure. And on the night May Locher died, one of the two bald men coming out of her house had a pair of scissors in his hand.

What does it all mean? Ralph doesn't quite know. But the bizarre visions he's been having keep getting more intense, the strange deaths in Derry have just begun, and Ralph knows he isn't hallucinating.

Returning to the town of Derry, Maine, the setting of one of his most critically acclaimed novels, It, Stephen King combines bone-chilling realism with supernatural terror to create yet another masterpiece of suspense.

What the Critics Say

"This is a yarn so packed with suspense, romance, literary reference, fascinating miscellaneous knowledge, and heart that only Stephen King could have written it. Marvelous - that is, full of marvels." (Booklist)

    "Who decides these things?"

While I enjoyed the story overall, even though it seemed to take a while to get started, and then seemed to meander around kind of aimlessly, what I absolutely HATE about this audio book is the "Music" selection between chapters. Just as I'd start getting into the story, and really getting tensed up wanting to know what was going to happen next, the chapter would change, and this god awful "music" would come on, which would pull me completely out of the book. There were a couple of times I wanted to claw the earbuds out of my ears, it was so awful. I'm going to finish the book, just to find out how the story ends, but I'm pretty sure I won't listen to this one again.

"Should be called, "Cure for Insomnia""

Considering this audio book is over 24 hours long, and the story didn't really start to become in the least interesting until I was into the 2nd, 8 hour portion, I was highly disappointed in this novel. The only part of the recording that prevents one from drifting off is the highly annoying, ear piercing sounds between chapters that others have already mentioned.

I usually prefer fantasy and historical fiction, but having been a Stephen King fan in high school, I decided to try this title. Big mistake. I can't believe I paid for this book.

The book is long, tedious, and slow paced. Even when the story starts to become a story, it really just isn't very interesting. I think of how I used to read SK and worry that a vampire was outside my bedroom window, but couldn't stop reading. Not the case here.

Not only is this book not interesting, but it rambles, and has so many disconnected pieces that take so long to even hint at a connection, that I found myself often just thinking, "get on with it, already!"

I am not one to quit once I begin a book, so I stuck it out to the end. I can't recommend this book to anyone.

    "Spooky"

Great story as usual in the classic Stephen King style. Narration was ok, but I could have done without the background music. I'm not even sure what the purpose of the music was. Not only was the music itself kind of bad, but it was also a little too loud, drowning out the voice of the narrator at times, and it also served as a distraction from the story itself.

    "Certainly different."

I am a third of the was through now and I too wish that the music was not there...I think I would be enjoying the story much more, and would be able to really sink into a story such as this, however, because of the soundtrack...well, it's not impossible but difficult, and sometimes annoying.
I don't regret buying it though. I love Mr King's style so much.
PS. I listen with my MP3 connected to my Bose speakers, but the music is still drowning out some of the speech, nice narrator though,

I couldn't finish the book, absolutely terrible. The narrator was awful and the book jumped all over the place. A terrible experience.

"Its not the music that is bad."

I tried to read this novel and gave up. It rambles on and on. I honestly believe King was just randomly writing this novel with no idea where it was going. I hated it when I read it. SO I decided maybe if I listened to it might be better. Nope. Whether your pro or anti abortion, the topic in this book is annoying. What the heck was King thinking writing this crap. One of his worst books by far.

The problem is not with music. When they recorded this crappy book and listened to it I'm sure they realized that there was zero tension in the book so they threw in some music to try to cover up Kings lack of effort in writing this. By far Ralph Roberts is one of the worst heros in a book I read in years. He is passive and drones on and on his head about the same crap over and over. I hoped many times over he would get killed so the book could move on to someone else more interesting.

If this was Kings first book no one in the publishing industry would have ever given him a second book.

    "Typical Steven King,"
Would you consider the audio edition of Insomnia to be better than the print version?

Yes, more detail, great story . Shows people with a little age can still get it done.

What did you like best about this story?

    Just the story it's self.

Have you listened to any of Eli Wallach’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No this is the first.

    Story
    "Not his best"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'm not sure who would like this.

What was most disappointing about Stephen King’s story?

The story was long, rambling and there was no point.

What didn’t you like about Eli Wallach’s performance?

His voice fit the story line, but the story was so awful.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Insomnia?

Redo the entire story. It's hard to believe this is a Stephen King book.

    Any additional comments?

    Totally disappointed.

I have been listening to books on tape for over 20 years. Starting with audio tapes, then CD's and now downloads.

    "A Stephen King Filler"

This one never really got me hooked. I listened to the whole story and did enjoy it. But it is not a story that I could not put down. The main characters being elderly may have had something to do with it. I don't know. But it was worth listening to. I guess I would say if you have read some of the other great King books (Dreamcatcher, Tower series, Carrie, Green Mile) then fill your collection with this one.
