Critic reviews

"Laced with fantastical mysticism, it’s an allegory of nonviolence, acceptance and love in the face of adversity. . . . The narrative is intense, with an old-fashioned ominousness and artistically crafted descriptions. . . . An optimistic and unexpected conclusion [mirrors] his theme. Something different this way comes from Mr. Koontz’s imagination. Enjoy." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Entrancing . . . as speedy a chase-thriller as any Koontz . . . has ever constructed. Written in Koontz’ late mellifluent and reflective manner . . . [ Innocence is] fueled by deep disgust with the world’s evils [and] hope for redemption" ( Booklist, starred review)
"[An] imaginative, mystical thriller from bestseller Koontz . . . This is the most satisfying Koontz standalone in a while" ( Publishers Weekly)

Not my favorite

First off, the Narrator was excellent.

I used to love Dean Koontz books and from time to time I find another that I really enjoy. But this one, as much as I wanted to love it, I probably wouldn't reread it. And not for what you're thinking.

First, I'm not a huge fan of a lot of flashbacks (a few are not bad and I tend to enjoy them, but too many is just too many). This book is rife with present versus past and when listening at work I often had to figure out--yet again--is this present or past?

Secondly, is the ending. I do not want to spoil this for anyone wanting to read it, but I was quite the fan of something different about our main protagonist in the beginning. And while I don't hate the ending, because.... it's an ending, it just kind of went down hill and became uninspiring. I guess it didn't turn into anything that I could have expected and while that may be on me, I was left... Meh.

Amazing story

Interesting, intriguing. Love the twist.
Dean Koontz fans will love this one. Like all stories the characters remain with you long after it has ended.

Ahead of it’s time!

It is amazing that this was inspired and written before 2020. Very enjoyable! I can’t wait to listen again knowing the twist at the end to pick up on all the foreshadowing and contextual details that I missed!

Not Bad

I have listened to many Dean Koontz, through great stories, bad stories, terrible narrators or great narrators. I read reviews but do not allow them to stop me from listening.
This book was different. I am proud of myself that I understood it! I think the end wrapped it up well and I GOT it!
I may not reread it but I am so happy I read it once.

Bounces back and forth. Not his best

Hard to get into. He keeps bouncing around. You are never sure whatare "clears" and "fogs". Very frustrating!

KOONTZ DOES IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to anyone that likes good vs evil type of books. Koontz is a master at it, his characters good or evil are always developed to the fullest.

What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

Very much, we all know a bad narrator can destroy an other wise great book!!! MacLeod Andrews is one of the best narrators.

Keep Listening; It's Worth It

Took me a good bit to get into it. I spent the first 45 minutes thinking "oh man, not sure I want to stick it out." Happy that I did. It was a good story told well. Narration was good. Would recommend if looking for something different.

Great book

I really enjoy reading most everything that Koontz writes. This went far beyond that. I was stunned by the beauty of this book. I'm going to have to listen again to be sure but I think this book is my new favorite. The thing I love about his work is the way the characters make you look at life. You see beauty where before was only bleakness.
