The woman narrating the novel had a very pleasant voice, though at times it was a little precious, but I couldn't tell if it was the writing or her interpretation.
The production values of the audiobook were horrible. The producers included a soundtrack that was distracting at best and totally inappropriate at its worst, and there was too much of it . Whoever chose the music clearly hadn't read the book, and I am giving that person the benefit of the doubt, because if they had read the book and still chose the tunes they chose, that person needs to find another career.
This novel takes place in the 16th century in Spain, Peru and Chile. Intro and outro music for chapters and sections was mostly "America, The Beautiful." Battle scenes were underscored with "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" Toward the end of the novel they saturated the underscoring with "Flight of the Valkyries" from Wagner's Ring Cycle. All three tunes are super recognizable, and totally inappropriate. It made the audiobook practically un-listenable.
The musical flourishes accentuating the story were a bit overdone and got in the way of the narrative. Found myself rolling my eyes several times -- felt like I was following a melodramatic telenovela instead of listening to a narration of one of my favorite authors
Absolutely. I love Isabelle Allende's books and have read all of her fiction - in english and in spanish and am now going through all of the audiobooks of her works in spanish. Finishing this one will be a challenge and I hope no more abridged versions with bells & whistles (literally) come out.
That is a very interesting question! One of Isabelle Allende's books has been turned into a movie and it would have been better if it had been in spanish and casted native chileans (not Meryl Streep pretending to be 16 when she was way over 40). It's a good story and Ines Suarez is a very interesting person. I would like to hear more about her
