Publisher's summary

Follow Father Tim and Cynthia on their journey to research his Kavanagh ancestry in the Irish countryside.

Vacation - the very word has been foreign to Episcopal priest Tim Kavanagh. Now retired from tending his flock in the village of Mitford, he is making good on a promise to show his wife, Cynthia, the charming land of his Irish ancestors. But after arriving at a Lough Arrow fishing lodge in the midst of a torrential downpour, the charm disappears.

They find their holiday upended by an intruder, a treasured painting is stolen from the lodge, and a family conflict dating back nearly a century turns even more bitter. As three generations struggle to find deliverance from the crucifying power of secrets, Tim and Cynthia stumble upon a faded journal that might just explain the crime - and offer a chance at redemption.

The Best One (so far)

I admit being skeptical about other positive reviews when I began listening. I was so fond of John McDonough's rendering of Father Tim and it was hard to get used to Erik Singer. Still, the excellent story kept me listening and I am so glad I did. Singer is just right for the Irish characters and the story is suspenseful, the character development rich, and the themes both touching and uplifting. I'm sure I will listen to this again. Don't miss it!

Thumbs Up

Jan Karon does it again with another book filled with charming characters, both new and old. Plots are fair, but her books are for people who read for characters. Erik Singer's narration is good, though for those of us who are accustomed to the other narrator, it is an adjustment. I did enjoy his Irish dialects.
If this is your first Jan Karon, I encourage you to start with the Mitford books.

Is by far the best book Jan has written

Along with father Tim, Cynthia reads the journal of an ancestor of the people who own the lodge that they are staying at in Ireland. So you get to 2 stories in 1. The way that Jan describes the Irish coast and the scenery was so vivid that I could smell and see and hear the loch, and hear the beating of the swans on their wings. She weaves the 2 centuries stories so well that you fall in love with every character and hate the ones that you should. In this audible It is a wonderful thing to hear the Irish accent and to hear the real Irish words but more than that is how the grace of God is woven and forgiveness and healing find their way into hearts so troubled that you think only death could be their answer.

A warm companion and food for the soul

Jan Karon astonishes me, the listener, with the depth and development of each character, their lives, and the places they live. The story is gripping from start to finish and leaves me with much to think about and cherish in my own life.

Give this one a chance

I didn't think I was going to enjoy this 1 at 1st glance, rather after listening through a chapter or so. But as always the characters became enduring in the storyline was engaging. I listened to an audio book rather than reading the paper book, and I highly recommend going about it this way! No need to trip and stagger over pronunciation of words I am not familiar with. Anyway it's worth your time!

Great story, great narration!

I am very partial to John McDonough’s narration and characterization of Father Tom and Cynthia. I despised the narrator for Home to Holly Springs and was therefore tentative about this one. However, this narrator seem to know the characters well, and did a great job with the Irish accent. The story is intricate and keeps you moving forward. Love the book!

Can't get enough of Father Tim

This is the first narration of a Milford series book for me but it was wonderful. Beautifully done accents and individual voices for each character. Jan Karon is a truly great writer.
