Hard on the ears!

The story was not bad. It was a little drawn out but, overall a decent story. But, my ears were practically bleeding from this narrator. The strange pronunciations nearly made me turn it off. I understand that different regions have different accents, but when you are reading southern you need to be SOUTHERN. I have 3 more of Stephanie Bond's book narrated by the woman. I'm almost afraid to listen to them for fear the words garage and herb are in them.

Too much sex not enough character develop or humor.

I do not want explicit sex in my books so I will not buy more of her books.

salt and vinegar chips was the highlight

Penny ripping into her stash of chips was the best part of this book. I had to double time it to get through the first half. Then slowed it down because it felt like it was getting good. It didn't. It stayed fairly okay. the story was good, narration was good (even on double time), but there's no one character that I loved.

Narrator ruined it

What disappointed you about In Deep Voodoo?

The story is set in the south Louisiana, and all the characters have awful not remotely southern accents

What didn’t you like about Maureen Jones’s performance?

not a good fit for the story

SAVE YOUR MONEY -- run AWAY

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

1) a better story -- a good story.
2) a narrator who can say the word 'garage' and 'cupola'
3) a main character that was just a BIT believable

Has In Deep Voodoo turned you off from other books in this genre?

which genre?!! it was 'sort of'' a mystery. it was 'sort of'' a romance. what it really was was BORING. so, yes, i am turned off by other books in the genre of BORING

How did the narrator detract from the book?

she needs to work on pronouncing words correctly -- see above. other reviews mention this. I didn't think it would be that big a deal. it IS a big deal. They are not mispronounced just a couple times, its over and over and over again.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I only wanted to stab my eyes out a bit to take away the pain.

Any additional comments?

I'm asking for my money back -- even getting a book for cheap
-- it was a waste of my TIME and my money

A major waste

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

No one, a very slow moving book and possibly the worst narration I've ever heard, finally gave it up after about 1/3 through the book.

Has In Deep Voodoo turned you off from other books in this genre?

I've listened to over 300 books and about half fit in this genre. I generally enjoy an easy listening experience as I'm usually doing other things at the same time...

Would you be willing to try another one of Maureen Jones’s performances?

Not if I know it's her

couldn't finish

What would have made In Deep Voodoo better?

audiobooks are all about the narrator, they can make or break a great story. I don't know how good this story is because I couldn't finish it. The reader did not fit the story.

Would you ever listen to anything by Stephanie Bond again?

Perhaps with a different reader

Mediocre

What would have made In Deep Voodoo better?

I bought this book because I needed something light hearted to listen to at work. It was that. The plot was a little weak but the plot twist towards the end did help out. The main character was likeable but I think they could have developed the character more. My biggest complaint was the lack of authenticity when it came to the dialect of the location of the story. Overall it was decent.

Has Potential, Just Lacks Engagement

The story has so much potential, though lacks that extra hook due to over detailing and excessive description. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate fine details to frame a story, though this definitely misses the mark. As for the narrator, she is a very good narrator, just unfortunately not a good fit for this southern story. Like others have mentioned, her pronunciation is not of a southerner. If this story took place in northern Maine, she would be excellent!
