Publisher's summary

Identical twins Dominick and Thomas Birdsey were born in the waning moments of 1949 and the opening minutes of 1950. Now at 40, Dominick's entire life has been compromised and constricted by anger and fear, by the paranoid schizophrenic twin brother he both loves and resents, and by the past they shared with their adoptive father, Ray, a spit-and polish ex-Navy man, and their long-suffering mother, Concettina. The brothers' relationship undergoes the ultimate test when Thomas commits an unthinkable act that threatens the tenuous balance of both his and Dominick's lives. Wally Lamb's long awaited follow-up to the critically acclaimed novel She's Come Undone is narrated by Tony Award-winning actor Ken Howard.

The Narration! Omg!

This was such a compelling real life story of finding your identify when in the shadows of a sibling. The narration is PERFECT. 100/10!

Amazing story! Horrible recording.

This is an amazing story that I could relate to so much as a twin who has a twin with mental health struggles. I just hate that the recording quality was not that great.

Old Recording Needs a Remix

This is my favorite Wally Lamb story, and Ken Howard does a wonderful job (his Thomas-voice is chilling)…

HOWEVER this must be a very old recording. The mix is horrible! Music meant to denote chapter breaks completely obscures the performance. It sounds like a radio program is playing in the background! And often it sounds like it was recorded in a tin can.

This book is too important to have such a poor rendering. I’m ashamed of Audibles for not remixing it!

Real

A real story that so many people can connect with on some level in so many ways.

Another Wally Lamb Insight

Despite challenging circumstances, the characters grow and learn and so does the reader. Thanks Wally.

Warning this is abridged

Why even have a abridged version?!?! So disappointing and mad that I wasted a credit but my fault for not checking but never had that issue until this book

Disappointed

I read the actual book years ago, and wanted to listen to it, ordered on audible not realizing it was abridged! Why isn't there an unabridged version as of Feb 2023?

Missing so much

So sad just how much was cut out of this beautiful book. Was always one of my favorites, but I'm left unsatisfied having missed out on so much.

Disappointed

I thought the story line was so interesting but the main character had so many intolerable personality flaws that seemed acceptable throughout the book. I couldn’t force myself to keep listening.
