Publisher's summary

David Sedaris's beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story. Along with such favorites as the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters ("Us and Them"); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French ("Jesus Shaves"); what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm ("Let It Snow"); the puzzling Christmas traditions of other nations ("Six to Eight Black Men"); what Halloween at the medical examiner's looks like ("The Monster Mash"); and a barnyard secret Santa scheme gone awry ("Cow and Turkey").

No matter what your favorite holiday, you won't want to miss celebrating it with the author who has been called "one of the funniest writers alive" (Economist).

Editorial Review

You didn’t think I was going to be *all* doom and gloom, did you?? Last night I picked up a bottle of brandy from the corner wine store, poured it with a splash of eggnog into my Fishs Eddy Turnt tumbler, and settled in for an evening of wrapping gifts and listening to David Sedaris’s Santaland Diaries from Holidays on Ice. His hilarious account of working as a department store elf is an absolute classic (shenanigans, obviously, ensue), and I hope you’ll love it as much as I do. —Rachel S., Audible Editor

My favorite holiday story collection

I listen to this every Christmas season, it's a tradition in our household. No matter how many times I've heard it, the Macy's elf story cracks me up.

OH LITTLE ELF, OH LITTLE ELF

I'M GOING TO HAVE YOU FIRED!!
Santaland Diaries is one of the funniest holiday routines ever. I like my comedy dry, so keep that in mind. This used to play every year on NPR on Christmas Eve, so they approved. If you don't like your comedy dark, you may not like this and especially the rest of the stories which get very dark. If your from JASPER'S BREATH, KENTUCKY, collect PRE-COLUMBIAN SOFA BEDS, or eat a lot of INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH LASAGNA you might want to skip this. I also loved 6 to 8 Black Men, Let it Snow, Us and Them and Christmas Means Giving.

Hilarious

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes

Who was your favorite character and why?

David as the Santa Elf

Have you listened to any of David Sedaris’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes as many as I can. This is up to the same quality.

Any additional comments?

This is a little too dark for anyone under 40 to hear.

Comic Genius

Once again in this new edition Sedaris shows his creative ingenuity and why he is one of our favorite, best selling authors. The story comparing cultural Santas is sheer comic genius and side-splittingly hilarious. Just buy it.

Funny $*!&

These stories are literally laugh out loud funny. A couple are a little bit creepy, but even those, with Sedaris reading them at least make you smile through your horror. Some of them will make you laugh so hard you cry.

Unexpectedly Mean Spirited

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I have always been a fan of David Sedaris. In this collection, the "autobiographical" stories are just as good as expected. His stories, though, are mean and show a shocking anger towards children. This makes me look at Sedaris in a new light. He is still funny and engaging, but definitely has issues with children. Don't let him babysit your kids is all I'm saying.

What could David Sedaris have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Stick to autobiographical essays

Which character – as performed by David Sedaris – was your favorite?

Himself

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I hope not

Any additional comments?

Maybe add "violence towards children" as a topic to explore with your therapist, sir.

Christmas at its best

A friend gave me this book as a Christmas present, I love the stories, they are not a Walton Christmas story , its real life an David Sedaris is wonderful. Make this part of your Christmas tradition.

Hit and miss

I like his live stories and the Macy’s one. Not a huge fan of the fictional essays and shorts.
