Publisher's summary

David Sedaris's beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story. Along with such favorites as the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters ("Us and Them"); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French ("Jesus Shaves"); what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm ("Let It Snow"); the puzzling Christmas traditions of other nations ("Six to Eight Black Men"); what Halloween at the medical examiner's looks like ("The Monster Mash"); and a barnyard secret Santa scheme gone awry ("Cow and Turkey").

No matter what your favorite holiday, you won't want to miss celebrating it with the author who has been called "one of the funniest writers alive" (Economist).

Editorial Review

You didn’t think I was going to be *all* doom and gloom, did you?? Last night I picked up a bottle of brandy from the corner wine store, poured it with a splash of eggnog into my Fishs Eddy Turnt tumbler, and settled in for an evening of wrapping gifts and listening to David Sedaris’s Santaland Diaries from Holidays on Ice. His hilarious account of working as a department store elf is an absolute classic (shenanigans, obviously, ensue), and I hope you’ll love it as much as I do. —Rachel S., Audible Editor

Worth it for the 1st story but the rest vary

It was interesting to hear the old classic santa land diaries with a little bit more content than the version done for This American Life.

Some of the other stories seem to go on a little bit too long. The audio quality for some of them is vastly different than others. One being a live performance.

It is worth it just for the santa land diaries story but no one will blame you if you switch it off after that.

Always entertaining

No matter how many times I listen to David Sedaris, it still feels fresh and new!

I Prefer The Original Version

I read Holidays on Ice before the revision. I am not fond of David Sedaris's fiction. Some of the stories didn't seem to have anything to do with Christmas. The original version didn't have as much fiction in it. it's still worth listening to, if only for Santa Land Express.

Needs an update

Generally, I really love David Sedaris. I listen to his holiday story on This American Life every year. I wanted to listen to his audio holiday stories, and was extremely disappointed and disillusioned. He’s so talented, but he absolutely needs to update his stories for today’s times. The amount of times he used the R word in multiple stories was really disappointing.

Mostly Repackaged Christmas Tales

I bought it for "Santaland Diaries" which I had never read, and it alone is worth the price of admission. The rest, to me, is just filler; I liked best the ones I'm already familiar with ("Dinah the Christmas Whore" and "Six to Eight Black Men").

Hilarious yet Dated

Another compilation of absurdly comical stories (fiction and non) by Sedaris - this time, with a realiist holiday twist. His way of seeing the world never gets old - it's downright enchanting; though, his references to "retarded" people and unsavory depictions of people of color leave a bit of an awkward taste in one's mouth. Maybe a sign of the times?

Disappointed

This has problematic content and social appropriateness. We listened to a few chapters on Christmas Day with our young adult kids and we all cringed. We returned it

Just what you'd expect

David never disappoints, his unique view of the world (and holidays) takes on a perspective I know I've never considered. The only reason it's not 5 stars in all the categories is the composition on David's time at the morgue. Not something I would've expected in a book referencing the holidays, no matter how dark. That aside, I really enjoyed all the stories and it's always nice to hear Amy getting involved as well. The Christmas letter sorry was disturbing but funny! Thanks David, keep up the good work!
