    "First Knootz"

THis is my first of Mr. Knootz books. I enjoyed it, although it did drag in some areas. However, that aside, I look forward to hearing more of his works.

    "Hideaway"

Vassago (I heard Massago?) is the most singularly evil character I have encountered in a long while. Delicious. Carol Cowen's Regina was perfect. Last quarter of the book seemed to drag on a bit, and I was hoping for a more painful end for the villain.

    "Another nail-biter from Koontz"
If you could sum up Hideaway in three words, what would they be?

    Hang on tight.

What did you like best about this story?

The complete development of the characters.

What about Michael Hanson and Carol Cowan ’s performance did you like?

The ability to pronounce words most of us would trip on. They never missed a beat as their pacing was excellent.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    The pre-adoption meeting.

    Any additional comments?

As always, Koontz is a master of suspense and you never know what's around the next corner.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Koontz's inability to take his politics and personal belief out of his books. Often I just roll my eyes (Strangers; I refuse to even try Sleepwalker because I don't need more of his color-blind, reverse racism politicking in fiction), but the one scene where his male protagonist spews his thoughts about the adoption process and dreams of strangling social workers is idiotic because it came from nowhere but also distracting and jarring. It didn't make any sense that a couple who

Would you ever listen to anything by Dean Koontz again?

    Possibly.

Have you listened to any of Michael Hanson and Carol Cowan ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes! This is one of the best, on par with Cold Fire, and better than The Bad Place.

Was Hideaway worth the listening time?

    Yes.

    Any additional comments?

Koontz is a better rental than purchase.

"You either Like Koontz or you don't"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Another author. I should have known better. I have read a number of Koontz novels in the past. But that was before I became a fan of audiobooks. Reading him in print, I used to skip vast portions of his syllabic gushing. Koontz, unfortunately, does not know the meaning of "efficient and concise use of the English language". I have just read one-third of this book and we have just covered the automobile accident and the airlift to the hospital. And I have skipped through, at the very least, one-third of that. He probably has a wonderful ending, but I cannot endure the trip with Koontz.

Which character – as performed by Michael Hanson and Carol Cowan – was your favorite?

Hanson and Cowan both did a fabulous job. Of the two, I preferred Carol Cowan. She has a marvelous voice. Michael Hanson gets a bit too involved in enunciating Koontz with dramatic flare. Whereas, Carol Cowan tones Koontz down, Michael Hanson seems to add to Koontz's grammatical circus. I think he would be great with another author.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Despair

    "Interesting"

This was pretty good - fairly typical for Dean Koontz - fans will understand what I mean by that! :) I gave it 4 stars since it kept me company (and awake) in an airport all night!

The first part of the book moved fairly quickly, but the end seemed to drag, despite the surprises along the way. I also felt like the ending was a let down... build up, build up, build up - over.

With that said, it was an entertaining listen - I like Carol Cowan's narration style. Michael Hanson has a good voice, but the switching between them was a little jarring at times.

    "Absolutely Awful"

This is the first time I have ever stopped listening to a book. A little more than half way through I finally gave up on any chance of there being an improvement to the storyline and just Quit!

    "Dean Koontz - really?"

Boy, what a disappointment. It was all so cliche, so boring and not worthy of Koontz. What was he thinking? It seems like he was on the hook to write something - anything. But, one would hope if that was the case he could do better than this. Makes me leary to get any others.

"Is there a way to give a minus 4 star rating?"

Are you kidding? This is the worst book I have ever listened to!!! I want my money back! Sickening, unnecessary detail; author in love with the word "ramparts"; and awful narration. This book has NO redeeming features.
