Publisher's summary

Hell House is the scariest haunted house novel ever written. It looms over the rest the way the mountains loom over the foothills.” — Stephen King

From the author of
I Am Legend comes Hell House, the basis for the supernatural horror film starring Pamela Franklin, Roddy McDowall, Clive Revill.

For over twenty years, Belasco House has stood empty. Regarded as the Mount Everest of haunted houses, its shadowed walls have witnessed scenes of unimaginable horror and depravity. All previous attempts to probe its mysteries have ended in murder, suicide, or insanity. But now, a new investigation has been launched, bringing four strangers to Belasco House in search of the ultimate secrets of life and death. A wealthy publisher, brooding over his impending death, has paid a physicist and two mediums to establish the facts of life after death once and for all. For one night, they will investigate the Belasco House and learn exactly why the townsfolk refer to it as the Hell House.

Hell House, which inspired the 1973 film The Legend of Hell House, is Matheson’s most frightening and shocking book and an acknowledged classic of the genre.

Shirley Jackson was inspired to write the novel after reading about a group of psychic researchers who spent time in a house believed to be haunted. In an essay, Jackson explained that she was less interested in the investigation itself and more intrigued by what could be learned about the people conducting the investigation. If you're a fan of the super creepy Netflix series, here's the lowdown on how the two chilling incarnations stack up.

An amazing tribute to a genius author.

One of the workds finest horror authors is given new life in this reading. Richard Matheson was brilliant beyond his years and his works are timeless and to this day, his novels are deciptabely timeless and read as though they where published recently. The reader does an amazing job of fleshing out each character and is superbly talented.
This book is a must read for any reader, but especially for any lover of horror.
Absolutely captivating and an amazing production.

a decent horror story

The ending was drawn out too long and it felt contrived. the story was great and engaging until the very end.

Great narration, so-so story.

Struggled to finish, narrator did a great job but the story was slow and hard for me to stay up with, kept losing my attention.

Amazing performance

The reader was amazing for this book and even did female voices that had me wonder if there weren't other actors. Older book, but the storyline had me up to the end. Good paranormal mystery.

great story/narration

Story was great, well written and engaging. If you find ANYTHING narrated by Ray Porter it's likely worth a credit.

had potential...

I don't know what to really say about this book except i was a bit bored through most of it. The "scary" parts of the book were not fully formed and left a lot to be desired and left me wondering if i missed something mentioned so i re-listened and nope, i didn't miss anything, the information to help my confusion wasn't there.

Vulgar

Adequate story, very vulgar. I cared for characters. It certainly showed the depravity that some can fall. Disturbing.

Excellent and chilling

Ray Porter does a masterful job with this performance. The story is already so good, but his performance makes it that much more chilling. One of the best I’ve seen since coming to audible in the horror genre.

I was surprised how good it was

Excellent performance. I expected a haunted house story to be bland but it was gripping all the way through.
