Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Solo Narration - Female, 2014

Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect soufflé.

Critic reviews

"Great fun. . . . Though Heartburn bristles ferociously with wit, it's not lacking in soul." ( The New York Times Book Review)
"Nora Ephron's first novel is warm, witty and wise." ( Harper's Bazaar)

Passe Jewish Angst

Whilst Jewish angst whining was the rave in the 80's, it's long past its sell date and I get enough of it from still loving Phillip Roth, nevertheless. This was the waste of a credit. I'm no longer impressed with or entertained by the tedious forced cleverness of this exclusive haughty cynicism whom assumes her own superiority and entitlement.

Awful

Boring to the point I quit listening, may have listened for an hour, kept thinking it would pick up, it did not.

It was not what I thought.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book was not for me, it was too wordy, no action and boring. It put me right to sleep, I suggest insomniacs might enjoy it.

Would you ever listen to anything by Nora Ephron again?

Yes, I would give one of her other books a read.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Meryl Streep was awesome and not the problem. But the way the book was written, it was read in mono-tone.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Heartburn?

I don't even understand the purpose of the book. I would ask for "Entertainment" and a WOW feature. I like a book to surprise me so much, I suck in my breath when something unexpected happens!

Any additional comments?

This is my opinion only, it may be entertainment for others, but not me.

Absolutely HATE this type of book.

A friend recommended this author as funny and enchanting. I guess some people find this kind of puff-headed writing as funny and enchanting, but I do not. I found very little interesting and found the story quite stupid.

I will never again buy another one of this author's books.

Another great performance from Meryl Streep

What does Meryl Streep bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her vast experience as an actor is much of what makes the listening to this book so very enjoyable. Though it does help that Ephron's writing is so terrific.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes!

Meryl Streep is my woman crush.

Would you consider the audio edition of Heartburn to be better than the print version?

OOOOOHHHHHH yes. I liked the story overall but Meryl Streep took it to the next level. She's amazingly talented.

Would you be willing to try another book from Nora Ephron? Why or why not?

Maybe. I think I would have to be in the mood. It was slow-moving and just a lot of he said she said and gossip. That's not really my style but she did keep my attention until the end because I really, really wanted to know if Rachel would leave Mark.

Have you listened to any of Meryl Streep’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I would love to. I'd listen to a book on astrophysics if she narrated it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really.

Food for Life

In Heartburn, Nora Ephron pens a story of truth about relationships, commitment, heartache & betrayal within a family laced with the common comfort of food. Although we all have an escapism when things go awry, for this main character that thing is represented by food & cookbooks.

This is a great story that touches on the inner workings on marriage as an ultimate relationship and how an agreement between two parties on how that relationship is working is the central glue that can make or break it, in the end.

Meryl is a gift.

Have always loved Nora Ephron's movies now love her books. The combo of her writing with Meryl Streep's performance is outstanding.
