Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Solo Narration - Female, 2014

Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect soufflé.

Critic reviews

"Great fun. . . . Though Heartburn bristles ferociously with wit, it's not lacking in soul." ( The New York Times Book Review)
"Nora Ephron's first novel is warm, witty and wise." ( Harper's Bazaar)

Disappointing

I believed Meryl Streep & Ms Ephron would be a sure combo; NOT the case.

Meryl Streep just read a book to me!

Read by anyone else, I think this book would be mediocre at best. Funny and a engaging story but kind of slow and seems to dwindle out at the end. However Meryl Streep is the perfect narrator for the story. Not sure I would’ve laughed if anyone else would have read it to me. But I did laugh. Alot.

I had a smile on my face throughout the listen

This was such a fun listen. The combination of Nora's whit and Strip's voice is a winner!

Quick listen

Story: I believe this is based on Nora Ephron’s actual divorce. My thoughts are it hasn’t aged well - it’s incredible what women used to put up with from men. However, it’s well written and downright hilarious.

Performance: I mean... it’s Meryl Streep. Is any explanation on the awesomeness of her delivery necessary?

Typical

Just your typical neurotic, New York Jewish story. Meryl Streep gives an amazing performance as the neurotic, “I didn’t see THAT coming” wife. Worth the listen just for Meryl.

It’s a Cookbook!!!

Delicious, fun, bittersweet novel. It’s like Hemingway, but much more fun and with...hamsters. And bondage. But not at the same time. Flawlessly narrated by Meryl Streep, that woman should consider a movie career.

Wow! Can'b believe I just found this!

Where does Heartburn rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of my faves. Funny! Human and really an enjoyable book! Witty and well written!

Which scene was your favorite?

The names she gives the various people who are part of the love triangle, rectangle, not sure what to call this shape.

Any additional comments?

Meryl Streep is fabulous! The book is wonderful and the reading really makes it perfection.

Absolutely fabulous

Meryl Streep absolutely makes this book! Entertaining, witty and with dry humor throughout. I actually had to go back and replay a few pieces because I was laughing so much I missed the rest of the scene. An easy, comforting, funny listen that feels like having coffee with your girlfriends.
