What the Critics Say

  • Romantic Times Award Winner - Best Historical Mystery, 2000

"Filled with intrigue and nail-biting suspense...rich with detail and realism...ripe with tension and peril." (The Washington Post Book World)
"Between Amelia Peabody and Indiana Jones, it's Amelia, in wit and daring, by a landslide." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Despite having produced 11 previous tales of Egyptological mystery and detection, Peters still writes a deeply satisfying story that combines elements of espionage, mystery, and romance. Some big surprises are in store for readers while Peters deftly ties her subplots together, but a few threads are left dangling enticingly at the end, leaving fans to expect another installment in this extraordinary series." "Unabridged is the way to go"
What did you love best about He Shall Thunder in the Sky?

So many reviews of the next book in the series, Lord of the Silent, lamented the fact that it is only offered in the abridged version that I looked for the real deal elsewhere. I could not even find it (without a 9 person wait!) from my public library. I did find it at simply audiobooks DOT com. However, it's only in CD not digital form. Still, I can understand how an abridged version would be terrible: I can't imagine what could be edited!

What about Barbara Rosenblat’s performance did you like?

Barbara Rosenblat voices the characters' personalities perfectly!

"One of the best in the series!"

Oscar-rated narration, a wonderful, emotion-filled story, terrific character development and a wowee ending. This book has it all and I think it's one of the best in the series. Don't start reading the series with this one - it needs some backstory.

"Peters and Rosenblat together are winners!"
Would you listen to He Shall Thunder in the Sky again? Why?

One of Elizabeth Peters' best of the Amelia Peabody series, because Ramses finally "gets the girl."

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The twists and turns of Ramses' and David's daring actions as spys for the British in Egypt during the First World War will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Which character – as performed by Barbara Rosenblat – was your favorite?

Barbara Rosenblatt's excellent interpretation of all the characters is unbelieveable. Perhaps her biggest triumph is the growl-ly, "veddy British" voice she uses for (Radcliffe) Emerson.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I had the time I could certainly have listened to the whole book in one sitting. So glad to have this digital copy to return to time after time. Thanks, Audible!

    "One of my favorites"

I have been reading these in order over the years and this was one of my favorites from this era in the life story of the Emerson family. The story takes an interesting turn due to the current events of the time period and it make for some new angles on the usual tomb robbing/murder formula that we all like so much. I very much enjoy this series and found this book very entertaining.

    "My favorite Amelia Peabody Story"

After years of watching Ramsies, Nefret and David grow up here's where all the stories come together. Amelia is at her best protecting her son. Emerson grudgingly accepts his son as grown up. And the truth about Sethos is known. It's a great story of twists and turns set during World War I. Barbara Rosenblatt brings the characters to life. She's amazing and so are Amelia & Co.

    "wonderful series"

I love this series of books Elizabeth Peters has written. I can't wait to finish one and get the next one. Emerson and Peabody have adventures every time they go some where. Very entertaining, and make you want to go to egypt. The narrator is very good and make the book lively.

    "Full of Intrigue"

Elizabeth Peter's books should be read in sequence. This is one of her Egyptian series. The books are long, a bit wordy, so sometimes hard to keep all the goings on in the mind. The author and narrator do a good job of character definition. The Family is very well portrayed in their dedication to one another and understanding of each others' eccentricities. Often you are kept guessing as to "Who done it" .

    "Best one yet"

The entire series bears listening to from beginning to end... taking advantage of the vocal talents of Barbara Rosenblatt. The series develops relationships and a history that draws the listening in. This offering, while probably the longest, was my absolute favorite. The talents of Barbara Mertz, AKA Elizabeth Peters, knows no bounds. Thoroughly enjoyable.

"Another execellent one from E. Peters"

My first and favorite is Children of The Storm.
This one answers a lot of questions about the
    character's backgrounds.
