Publisher's summary

It's 1798, and Dewey Lambdin's lovable but incorrigible rogue, Captain Alan Lewrie, and his crew of the Proteus frigate, have their work cut out for them as they sail through the war-torn Caribbean. First, Lewrie has rashly vowed to uphold a friend's honor in a duel to the death. Second, he faces the horridly unwelcome arrival of HM Government's Foreign Office agents. And last, he must engineer the showdown with his arch foe and nemesis, the hideous ogre of the French Revolution's Terror, that clever fiend Guillaume Choundas! Lewrie must also deal with the newly reborn United States Navy, that uneasy, unofficial "ally", and the stunning, life-altering surprise they bring. For good or ill, Lewrie's in the "quag" up to his neck, this time.

Critic reviews

"Once again, Lambdin manages to interweave several complex story lines into a suitably knotty naval yarn that will appeal to fans of historical maritime fiction." ( Booklist)

A solid Sea Adventure

If you could sum up Havoc's Sword in three words, what would they be?

Enjoy Naval adventure in nautical and personal detail.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Of course, Captain Allen Lewrie..center of authors attention. I wanted to see what he caused to happen next.

Have you listened to any of John Lee’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, John Lee does a good job in English, not so well in other languages. But John Lee is a powerful narrator and is excellent in this series, too.

If you could take any character from Havoc's Sword out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Allen Lewrie, along with his father, the Colonel.

Any additional comments?

This was the last of the Allen Lewrie series to be on Audiobook with Audible.com. I assume because its not all naval battles, but deals with personal issues as well as the minutia of a life at sea, the Brtish Naval organization with its colorful characters , as well as the effects of leaving loved one's behind for years at a time.I found the authors concentration in these areas to be rewarding on balance. Not necessary the best of listens for one up mainly for the adventure of Naval warfare. I was interested enough to keep touch with how Allen Lewrie was fairing that I have read the remaining books. And the author is not yet done, as I am certain that the War of 1812 has to be included before the Capatin can retire.Im sure an Admiral by that time.

good

I was wondering when the young lad would reappear. Good book which again sets the stage for a more action packed book.

Highly enjoyable, if you aren't French

As is typical of novels with an English perspective of the Napoleonic wars, the English are clearly the good guys. But so what, it's highly engaging and Captain Lurie is distinctly likeable. The picture painted is a vivid one, no muted colors.

Another great installment

After the last book in the series, this one was a nice refreshment with less gore and more japery. Happy to see this series just keeps on giving and has not simpered out.

Another engaging novel by Dewey Lambdin. Our hero, Alan Lewrie is up to his old tricks, foiling his enemies and charming the ladies. Great fun all around.
