Editorial reviews

Jim Hawkins is a taciturn old cowboy who doesn't seem to do or say much of anything. But when he takes his young grandson Henry on a horseback ride through the countryside, he begins to recount the scenes of his own youth, especially the tragedies he faced during harsh Montana winter of 1886. Johnny D. Boggs' writing is tough and richly detailed throughout, and William Roberts' sonorous performance comes alive when inhabiting Boggs' colorful characters. Hard Winter mixes historical fiction, Western narrative, and coming-of-age memoir to create an engrossing and novel listen.

Publisher's summary

Johnny D. Boggs examines the disastrous winter of 1886-87 in this critically acclaimed novel of the West.

Jim Hawkins hardly said a word to anybody, but that all changed in the spring of 1920 when Hawkins took his young grandson, Henry Lancaster, along on a scouting trip. Scouting for memories.

The man who rarely talked tells his grandson how he came to Montana from Texas as a young teenager with his pards Tommy O'Hallahan and John Henry Kenton, cowboys looking for country free of barbed wire, and how the winter of 1886-87 changed his life.

This is a powerful character study, aimed for younger and older listeners, richly detailed, with emotions as raw as the brutal winter winds.

Loved It

I’ve had the book for a while. I bought the Kindle to match.
I love it when they take into consideration the character and match up a voice that puts you right on the ranch.
