Publisher's summary

Consummate master of his craft, Stephen King has kept millions awake past midnight shivering at tales that probe the shadows and reveal the dark side. Now listeners can chill to this second dramatic unabridged production of short stories from his best selling book, Night Shift. It brings Stephen King's demonic stories fully to life—and the terror even closer to home.

Dropout drifter Hall has crossed the country doing whatever comes his way. Working the "Graveyard Shift" in a decaying Massachusetts mill under a bullying foreman is just one more leg in his crazy quilt journey, until it leads to a nether realm where the Rat Queen defends her empire. Things are never as they seem, as "The Man Who Loved Flowers" proves one perfect Spring evening on the sidewalks of New York. In "The Last Rung on the Ladder" beautiful Kitty hangs from dizzying heights above a hideous fate and, in "Night Surf," a group of teenagers on a late summer beach watch the world end in a gruesome, viral whimper. The mind-numbing secrets of "Jerusalem's Lot" wait in an ancestral mansion where blood binds the Boone family to a timeless history of unspeakable evil.

Best of the 'lot

While the dissecting of Night Shift into three parts appears to be a shameless grab for money, this volume is a bargain and a half. Some of the best of King's short fiction collection is here - the brutal and ravaging "Graveyard Shift" and utterly chilling "Jerusalem's Lot" - among less horrifying but equally well-told tales like "The Last Rung on the Ladder" and "Night Surf". Courtesy of John Glover, who lends a multi-textured performance across all of the stories contained in this selection, the listener can truly hear the beginnings of the masterful writing that would go on to create masterpiece novels like "The Stand" and "'Salem's Lot". When "The Man Who Loved Flowers" is the least terrifying of the bunch (and don't let the name or that description fool you), you know you're in for a wicked treat as only King can deliver.

Good stories, strange omissions.

very weird that these collections are only off ered in partial chunks, but whatever. I mean, sometimes you just need to read Jerusalem's lot again, or night surf, or whatever
also, stories are poorly indexed.

Half was great, half drug on

The best part of this collection for me was "Night Shift", as a kid i heard this story, I don't rememby why or what the context was, but I heard my mother tell it. It stuck with me, and it was a joy to find the original source. I also loved the "the Man Who Loved Flowers", it wasa really fun short read. The biggest let down for me was Jerusalem's Lot, I had already read Salem's lot and this really felt pale in comparison. All in all Stephen King writes some really fun short stories, I am actually starting to like them more than his novels.

The Last Rung

The Last Rung of the Ladder was very impressive to me. In how little time I spent with these characters but how large of an emotional impact they made of me.

Vintage Stephen King

Several short stories from Night Shift, King's first short story collection. The stories are excellent, Jerusalem's Lot being my favorite here. Not overly verbose as King has sometimes been accused of being. Night Surf is also, essentially, a chapter out of The Stand, with out the main players.

A solid read/listen. I did only give it 4 stars overall, because they broke the, not that large, book into multiple parts and not a single Audible title. I found that annoying, but probably was due to the place audiobooks held when this was released.

Recommended for fans of horror stories and more specifically of Stephen King.

I paid a full credit price

for 1/3 of a book. No regrets concerning content, however, it would be nice if the formatting at least would say the name of the stories or even have them end with a chapter. The producers and formaters could throw us dogs a bone.

King and Glover are Enthralling!

I couldn’t stop listening until well after midnight plus it was storming so it was much spookier than a daylight listen. The stories are fantastic, weird stuff that could and practically happens. The performance by Glover was phenomenal! Thank you both😀
