Publisher's summary

Gates of Fire puts you at the side of valiant Spartan warriors in 480 BC for the bloody, climactic battle at Thermopylae. There, a few hundred of Sparta’s finest sacrificed their lives to hold back the invading Persian millions. The time they bought enabled the Greeks to rally - saving, according to ancient historian Herodotus, “Western democracy and freedom from perishing in the cradle.” How did the Spartans accomplish this superhuman feat? This is what the King of Persia hopes to learn from the sole Spartan survivor. The squire’s story indeed reveals the incredible rigors of Spartan training - and more importantly, how the whole culture fostered the mindset of fearlessness.

Steven Pressfield has skillfully combined scholarship and storytelling to bring the whole world of ancient Sparta brilliantly to life. George Guidall’s dramatic delivery enhances the richness and feeling of this inspired recreation.

A story of the Spartan and Greek culture.

What made the experience of listening to Gates of Fire the most enjoyable?

Saying that the story is about (only) the Battle of Thermopylae is like comparing this story to an iceberg. Most of the story content in underneath the surface. You will learn about Spartan culture and the their training. You will learn about the caste system of the Greek society. Steven Pressfield skillfully weaves his story eyes and ears of a Persian historian. and the lone survivor of the Battle of Thermopylae..

What other book might you compare Gates of Fire to and why?

Many of Steven Pressfield's books feature story development through the backgrounds of the characters. . You have the opportunity to understand why, a person would do what they did.

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?

They are all memorable.

If you could rename Gates of Fire, what would you call it?

It would b too presumptuous to call it anything else.

Very enjoyable listen

The story was great. The reader did a great job as well. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys history. It's an entertaining fictional take on the events surrounding Thermopylae with strong roots in the historical realities of the cultures involved.

Amazingly thoughtful writing performed with passion by one of the greatest performers of audio theater

The depth of insight and character development transport the listener to another era, another world. George Guidall brings the characters to life and a tale that has been misconstrued by Hollywood begins to make sense. Full of humor, insight, sorrow and tension this re-enactment of the Spartan battle against the Persian army at Thermopylae is impossible to put down. Find a comfy place to be transported and enjoy the ride.

Solid, accurate and gripping

Steven Pressfield gives a fantastic rendering of Spartan culture and bravery. It has all the grit, all the guts and all the glory that you would hope. I think even the three hundred who gave their lives at Thermopylae would be honored.
