Publisher's summary

There is a most unusual woman living in Gap Greek. Julie Harmon works hard, "hard as a man," they say, so hard that times she's not sure she can stop. She is the one who has to be strong when first her brother and then her father die. People depend on her. They need her to slaughter the hogs and cut the wood. People are weak, and there is so much to do.

Though she is just a teenager, she marries Hank and moves with him down from the high country to Gap Creek. There they discover that life grinds ever on without pause or concern for hard work. Scratching out an existence for themselves, always at risk of losing it all, Julie and Hank don't know what to fear the most - floods, or the flesh-and-blood grifters who insinuate themselves into their new lives. Their struggles with nature, with work, and with the disappointments and triumphs of marriage make this a powerful story.

Story line wasn't bad, delivery could've been better...

The Appalachian accent of the narrator was a bit too drawn out, and at times, sounded choppy as if she was reading like a 6 year old. I've never heard people sound that way when they are talking. And, I'm certain the author did it on purpose, but never using a verb other than "said" for conversation was tiring. Story line was good, though.

Exceptional

Julie Harmon is a strong protagonist. Her story is not one you read or listen to, you live it with her. You experience her pain, grief, determination and dispare.
It's been a long time since a story moved me as this one did. I would love to see it adapted into a screenplay.

Annoying narration style

The narrator was excellent and changed voice style, which should have been sufficient for the listener to understand the character changes. Adding the "she said" and "he said" interrupted the story flow and was very annoying.

For the whole family....The perfect narrator.

Jill Hill should have narrated "The road from Gap Creek". I won't be
purchasing the audio...Have to buy the book so I can imagine her voice.
Heart wrenching, sweet, and makes u smile over the main characters strength strengths and endurance.

very depressing

I listened to the whole book, and was left very disappointed in it. It was so depressing, depressing, depressing! I so wanted it to have something good to happen to Julie, but it never happened.

Life today is so easy...

I didn't just hear this book, I felt the exsperiences of these people. Life then, compared to life today makes me thankful and very respectful of our forfathers even more.
Get this book and have a few hours of sheer wonder, pleasure and pain.
