Publisher's summary

The state police of Troop D in rural Pennsylvania have kept a secret in Shed B out back of the barracks ever since 1979, when Troopers Ennis Rafferty and Curtis Wilcox answered a call from a gas station just down the road and came back with an abandoned Buick Roadmaster. Curt Wilcox knew old cars, and he knew immediately that this one was...wrong, just wrong. A few hours later, when Rafferty vanished, Wilcox and his fellow troopers knew the car was worse than dangerous.

Curt's avid curiosity took the lead, and they investigated as best they could, as much as they dared. Over the years, the troop absorbed the mystery as part of the background to their work, the Buick 8 sitting out there like a still-life painting that breathes - inhaling a little bit of this world, exhaling a little bit of whatever world it came from.

In the fall of 2001, a few months after Curt Wilcox is killed in a gruesome auto accident, his 18-year-old boy, Ned, starts coming by the barracks. Sandy Dearborn, Sergeant Commanding, knows it's the boy's way of holding onto his father, and Ned is allowed to become part of the Troop D family. One day he looks in the window of Shed B and discovers the family secret. Like his father, Ned wants answers...

From a Buick 8 is an audiobook about our fascination with deadly things, about our insistence on answers when there are none, about terror and courage in the face of the unknowable.

Critic reviews

"Nearly flawless and one terrific entertainment." (Publishers Weekly)
"A wonderful example of how much King's plotting skills and literary finesse have matured over his long career. And, most of all, it's a darn creepy book." (Amazon.com)

Better than I thought it would be

A friend recommended this book, but I was put off by the title. I decided to try it anyway because I like Stephen King. I liked the fact that it was read by several different people rather than one person trying to speak in male/female voices. If you liked Insomnia and the Tommyknockers this will appeal to you. It is not horror, but an indulgence in "realistic fantasy" if there is such a thing.

Steven King - Buick 8

Rate this on as a fairly good King novel. Not vintage like Stand or Shining but better than Bag of Bones. Story is compelling and moves well. Excellent discription, a King halmark. A keeper.

Left me Wanting More

I really got invested in the characters even the weird time jumps were okay, but nothing ever came to a climax like I was expecting. No showdown, no rock fight, no lesson learned... it didn't really feel like a King story. But, I still liked it.

Blue Collar Lovecraft

When a group of state troopers find themselves in possession of a peculiar not-quite-a-car, life gets a little more interesting for them, from random light shows to bizarre creatures that are incompatible with the Earthling environment. But ordinary life and pains march on, none the less, a lesson the troopers attempt to teach the son of a trooper.

Lose, but entertaining plot that is almost a comedy at times. Not one of King's more typical or famous works, but a pleasant uniqueness all the same.

Classic King

Every once in a while I discover that I've missed a book by my favorite author. This is the case in From a Buick 8. Like many of Kings other books this one took me to a different place and distracted me from the news of the day, which I definitely needed!
