Publisher's summary

The state police of Troop D in rural Pennsylvania have kept a secret in Shed B out back of the barracks ever since 1979, when Troopers Ennis Rafferty and Curtis Wilcox answered a call from a gas station just down the road and came back with an abandoned Buick Roadmaster. Curt Wilcox knew old cars, and he knew immediately that this one was...wrong, just wrong. A few hours later, when Rafferty vanished, Wilcox and his fellow troopers knew the car was worse than dangerous.

Curt's avid curiosity took the lead, and they investigated as best they could, as much as they dared. Over the years, the troop absorbed the mystery as part of the background to their work, the Buick 8 sitting out there like a still-life painting that breathes - inhaling a little bit of this world, exhaling a little bit of whatever world it came from.

In the fall of 2001, a few months after Curt Wilcox is killed in a gruesome auto accident, his 18-year-old boy, Ned, starts coming by the barracks. Sandy Dearborn, Sergeant Commanding, knows it's the boy's way of holding onto his father, and Ned is allowed to become part of the Troop D family. One day he looks in the window of Shed B and discovers the family secret. Like his father, Ned wants answers...

From a Buick 8 is an audiobook about our fascination with deadly things, about our insistence on answers when there are none, about terror and courage in the face of the unknowable.

Critic reviews

"Nearly flawless and one terrific entertainment." (Publishers Weekly)
"A wonderful example of how much King's plotting skills and literary finesse have matured over his long career. And, most of all, it's a darn creepy book." (Amazon.com)

Intriguing and engaging, but not my fave SK

I am a Stephen King obsessed loser superfan. I hadn’t gotten to this one yet, and love audiobooks almost as much as king himself, so the great readers definitely influenced my purchase of the book. I must say they made the characters come alive with a depth the narrative itself kind of lacked. I haven’t read it in print, but the story was a little less riveting than maybe it could have been? Also - Christine is the essential haunted car read, so maybe I was biased. Worth the listen, but probably wouldn’t read in print like I normally would.

Fantastic! Great story wonderfully performed

I couldn’t stop listening, a book I’d read before made even better by top notch producers and performers. Highly recommended.

Narration nightmare

I liked the story, but the "round robin" style of narration was very distracting. They should redo the book with only one reader.

Wow! Great Book!

I found myself listening to this story over and over. It keeps getting better and better each I hear it. The details bring it to life. I would never believed that a car story would be more than a another "Christine move". Boy, am I glad that liked the author's name enough to buy this one. What I would have missed! This is money well spent! I am in love with audio books because of this story. I can't wait to buy more books by this arthur!

I never read a bad Stephen King book

To me, Stephen King is either good or amazing. In this book, he is good. Some parts really dig into you, other parts don't. If you liked, "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon", I think you'll like this as well.
Cheers!

Changed My Mind

I was given this book as a gift and honestly, it was one of my least favorite of Kings works ! Then my daughter bought me the audible and it has moved up to the top ten. The preformed bought a clarity and flow to the story which took it from “okay” to “Wow” a great book!!! Congratulations!!!!
