Publisher's summary

The state police of Troop D in rural Pennsylvania have kept a secret in Shed B out back of the barracks ever since 1979, when Troopers Ennis Rafferty and Curtis Wilcox answered a call from a gas station just down the road and came back with an abandoned Buick Roadmaster. Curt Wilcox knew old cars, and he knew immediately that this one was...wrong, just wrong. A few hours later, when Rafferty vanished, Wilcox and his fellow troopers knew the car was worse than dangerous.

Curt's avid curiosity took the lead, and they investigated as best they could, as much as they dared. Over the years, the troop absorbed the mystery as part of the background to their work, the Buick 8 sitting out there like a still-life painting that breathes - inhaling a little bit of this world, exhaling a little bit of whatever world it came from.

In the fall of 2001, a few months after Curt Wilcox is killed in a gruesome auto accident, his 18-year-old boy, Ned, starts coming by the barracks. Sandy Dearborn, Sergeant Commanding, knows it's the boy's way of holding onto his father, and Ned is allowed to become part of the Troop D family. One day he looks in the window of Shed B and discovers the family secret. Like his father, Ned wants answers...

From a Buick 8 is an audiobook about our fascination with deadly things, about our insistence on answers when there are none, about terror and courage in the face of the unknowable.

Critic reviews

"Nearly flawless and one terrific entertainment." (Publishers Weekly)
"A wonderful example of how much King's plotting skills and literary finesse have matured over his long career. And, most of all, it's a darn creepy book." (Amazon.com)

I loved it... you may not.

Any additional comments?

Let's be honest. Stephen King has wrote some real pieces of crap in the last dozen years or so. If you don't believe me just listen to "Lisey's Story" or "Hearts in Atlantis" or "Duma Key"... From a Buick 8 is actually good. It's a strange tale that's more about the people than the strangeness. I liked it... but I wasn't expecting much going into it.

Another King book, another pleaser...

How nice to always be pleased by S. King, to always be taken along for the ride. Being in an audio format really allows the listener to put themselves into the book so much more. Good story line, very different, and a pleasure to experience.

Great from beginning to end

Continuously surprised by the talent that read these books. All readers were simply amazing in their ability to bring to life the emotions put on paper by King.

Very Well Read, An Interesting But Sometimes Slow Moving Story

As far as an audiobook, the narration is very good. I tend to like Stephen King as an author. This story is science fiction. There are times I liked this story a lot and was intrigued by it. However there are times it moves slowly. I found myself often speeding up the reading speed on my device to keep things moving. Overall I am glad that I read it but it is not the author's best story. Thank You...

Another Strong Book from King

Not what I would consider in King's "top tier" but a very good book all the same. The narrators were excellent, and the story was steady if not sensational. King's horror is toned down in this one, but that is not a bad thing.

Can't get enough Stephen King

You can't ever go wrong with a Stephen King book. Awesome character development and fun, intriguing story lines. But I've got to say, I really don't like when the book is read by more than one narrator. It's a book. Not a show. Read to me. One person. Please.

You feel like you're sitting on the smoker's bench listening to every word. You become a link in the chain.
