"A grisly thriller....The odd juxtaposition of a police procedural with a neo-gothic, mad scientist plot gives the novel a wickedly unusual and intriguing feel....A compelling read, with an elegant cliffhanger ending." (Publishers Weekly)
I have read most of Mr. Koontz books over the years, and dispite several disapointing recent books, I believe that when he is "on" there is no better writer in the country today. With Frankenstein, Koontz is definately on! Presented as the first part of a series, this is the volume that lays down the backround and introduces it's odd but believable characters. Read with emotion by Scott Brick, we are treated to a modern day, historical, science fiction, horror mystery, police detective story with just enough humor to hold your interest all the way through. Plan on listening to this title in one session, because you won't want to put it down.
This book was an enjoyable, up to date version of the Frankenstein tale. The modern Frankenstein monster was an enigmatic, yet very intelligent creature. There were some interesting twist on the old tale that bring it into the 21st century.
I was disappointed that the end of the book wasn't the end of the story. Further, from reading the comments on the second book, it seems as though if you're going to start this, then you better be prepared for at least a 3rd novel and you'll need the patience of enduring a 2nd novel that has fair amount of repetition and not a lot of closure. Read the reviews of book 2 before diving into this series.
The book is, in itself, a good book, but I'm frustrated that this is going to drag on for at least 3 novels.
Scott Brick proves himself as a fabulous Narrator with this production.
This book accompanied me on a very long day of car driving, and I enjoyed every second of it - the story is wwell thought out, and it is clear that Mr. Koontz enjoyed writing this book - it was exactly what I wanted from the story, and I look forward to Book two.
The best description I can come up with is WOW!!! I have read most of his books, and this is a must read. This story is amazing. When I bought this one I just could not imagine a story line about Frankenstein, as it has been told over and over. But once again Dean comes through with a fantastic book and great story line. I can't wait for the rest of the story. I would love to finish it right now. If you like Koonth you will love this book!
I thought this would be a sort of a rewrite of the Frankenstein story, but it's more like a sequel. It's GREAT! I can't go into too much detail without giving something away, but you will find yourself really caring about these characters. I felt like I was in the story. The only problem I had was that he set it in New Orleans. I've lived there, so I kept getting distracted by some slightly off geography, and a district attorney by a name other than Harry Connick, Sr. It's a good listen, though. I recommend it.
Excellent!! It was a perfect mixture of classic Koontz and classic horror. The book leaves you wanting more. I can't wait for the second book in the series.
Basically either the author or publisher decided to take on book and sell it in three sections. A true trillogy would have three books that in themselves are a seperate leg of the on going story. These books are not. I listened to the first book and really liked it, but it basically just stopped in the middle of the story so I had to get the second book to find out how the story ends...Only that too stopped within the story again so you're forced to buy book three if you want to find out the end (And it started to seem that too was going to stop in the middle, but it did conclude, but did leave a door open for future books).
Books one and two are pretty good, but book three just came across as silly most of the time. The male and female police detectives went from ocassional morbid humor to almost a full stage act...but far less funny.
Ok...Had they taken the book and sold it in two additions I probably would have felt less angry about not getting it in one book....But I still would have felt that Dean Koontz lost interest with the story after the TV deal fell though and just wrote quickly to finish the project and move on. That's a shame because it really was interesting for about two thirds of the entire story.
I must let you know, YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS BOOK! I was "concerned" at first, another book about Frankenstein? Let me tell you, this is a cop book a book about a troubled family and a book about...Frankenstein. If you like Dean Koontz you can't go wrong with this one!
Mr. Koontz has turned out yet another great book. I simply could not turn it off and cannot WAIT until August for the next in the series.
