Publisher's summary

Christopher Moore, much beloved scrivener and peerless literary jester, now takes on no less than the legendary Bard himself (with the utmost humility and respect) with a twisted and insanely funny tale of a moronic monarch and his deceitful daughters, as seen through the eyes of a man wearing a codpiece and bells on his head.

Pocket has been Lear's cherished fool for years. So naturally Pocket is at his brainless, elderly liege's side when Lear demands that his kids swear to him their undying love and devotion. Of course Goneril and Regan are only too happy to brownnose Dad. But Cordelia believes that her father's request is kind of...well...stupid, and her blunt honesty ends up costing her her rightful share of the kingdom and earns her a banishment to boot.

Well now the bangers and mash have really hit the fan. And the only person who can possibly make things right . . . is Pocket. Now he's going to have do some very fancy maneuvering: cast some spells, start a war or two - the usual stuff - to get Cordelia back into Daddy Lear's good graces, to derail the fiendish power plays of Cordelia's twisted sisters, and to shag every lusciously shaggable wench who's amenable to shagging along the way.

Pocket may be a fool...but he's definitely not an idiot.

Best C. Moore Book to listen to.

Have read all Chris's books and listened to them all as well. For some reason I had trouble getting into this read, but the listen was spectacular. The narrator was great, the jokes were spot on, everything came together for me w/ the audio book!

The narration alone makes this worth a listen.

I adored this book. The ~9 hours felt like nothing as I raced through it. Pocket is such a fantastic character in a rich and interesting world. I highly recommend you pick this up.

Pay Attention

Creating a new story out of Shakespeare's King Lear is not an easy task. As usual, Christopher Moore lends his genius for research and melding his story with Shakespeare's play seems effortless and completely rational. The performance was stellar. The only complaint I have about this book is that it's difficult to stop and start back up again easily. It's a complicated tale, the book is not for the faint of heart. But it's a great tale, and we grow to love the Black Fool. I would suggest reading it when you have a good chunk of time to listen.

Hilarious, brilliant narration, my favorite

Hilarious, brilliant narration, one of my all-time favorite books. I've listened to it multiple times and every time I pickup new quick witted jokes that I missed in previous listens. Never gets old.

Oh yes, a sodding ghost!

Did not want this story to end and I was hooked front the start. All the characters were great and performed well by the actor who was extremely energetic and enthusiastic throughout the book.
This is not my first C. Moore book and it will not be my last. If this was your first then look at A Dirty Job after this.
