Publisher's summary

Growing up poor in Texas, Vera Lomax used every gold-digging trick in the book to land a rich husband. Now living in the lap of luxury in San Francisco, her only job is to fawn over her much-older husband, so it's been easy for her to balance a life of shopping and affairs with younger men with a major secret: the 16-year bribery of one of her husband's mistresses to keep her pregnancy under wraps. Vera figures that a little hush money every month will ensure her husband's fortune is hers alone.... Unfortunately for Vera, Sarah Cooper is the child Kenneth Lomax always wanted. When the father she never knew shows up at her mother's funeral to claim her, it's a fairy tale journey from the ghetto to a mansion on a hill. But Sarah's life is not as carefree as her father wants it to be...because Sarah knows from the start that her step-mother is as two-faced as they come. And after losing all the family she's ever known, she wants a life that's richer than what Vera's got planned for her.

Neither woman can be sure who will win Kenneth's heart and fortune. But as Vera and Sarah scheme to get what they want, everyone they know will be choosing sides, taking chances, and gambling it all to come out on top....

Good story

Okay, so here is the thing. Kenneth is stupid and he made a stupid daughter. Once you can get past how dumb they both are you just get committed to finishing to the end lol. I wish the characters had more common sense but the performers were great. And say what you want but Vera had the most sense out of all of them! I was happy with the ending.

Great book

I love books like this. The storyline kept my attention from the beginning to the very last end. The performance was just as good. This was the type of books that you continue to read and don’t want it to end. The bad guys got what they deserved.

It was just okay!

I’ve read several Mary Monroe books this had to be my LEAST favorite! The narrator of Vera and Sara was great. The others not do much. The story at tone drug on too much. Vera got what she deserved in the end. I was annoyed at the naive slowness of Sara. How you from the hood with zero street smarts??? Kenneth had his nerve acting disgusted by his daughter and wife . He did what they both did Vera’s lover got off too easy , why was he not in jail too??. The story kept me mildly interested and I was satisfied by Kenneth’s clap back on this family!

Hilarious

The readers who performed as Vera and Kenneth were hilarious. Mary wrote an outstanding book. I laughed throughout this book. It read like a modern day soap opera.

I didn't expect any less from Mary Monroe

What made the experience of listening to Family of Lies the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed how the story unraveled. There were touches of foreshadowing here and there that gave the story a hint of suspense. The characters were very human...sometimes even comical.

O The Drama

There were a lot of unexpected turns in this novel I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really appreciated how it ends , a woman lives her whole life playing games with her husband. A man playing games with his wife until he finds new meaning in his daughter.
