Publisher's summary

Sissy Hankshaw, an almost flawlessly beautiful small-town girl with big-time dreams, hitchhikes her way into your heart, your hopes, and your sleeping bag in Tom Robbins's magical, funny, and most famous novel. Follow Sissy's amazing odyssey from Virginia to chic Manhattan to the Dakota Badlands, where FBI agents, cowgirls, and ecstatic whooping cranes explode in a deliciously drawn-out climax. Along the way, you'll meet such unforgettable characters as Bonanza Jellybean and the smooth-riding cowgirls of Rubber Rose Ranch; Chink, the lascivious guru of yams and yang; Julian, an asthmatic Mohawk; and Dr. Robbins, the preventive psychiatrist and reality instructor. Even Cowgirls Get the Blues is Tom Robbins at his offbeat, outrageous, and inventive best.

Critic reviews

"This is one of those special novels - a piece of working magic, warm, funny, and sane - that you just want to ride off into the sunset with." (Thomas Pynchon)

Two thumbs up if I had any control over them.

I read "Still life with woodpecker" about 100 years ago. I feel like Michael Nouri was the voice in my head when I read that one. Very well performed. I'm not smart enough to pick up all the subtle nuances this book has to offer without the help of someone who understands it so well.

Truly a one of a kind piece of art. Ask yourself, have you ever called in well?

One of my All Time Favorites

This now ranks up there, for me, with Fear & Loathing, MASH, Owen Meany, and The Stand. This is only my second time. My first was when I was in my late teens, nearly forty years ago. I liked it then, but did not fully understand it. I do not have that many years remaining for a third time through, yet I suspect I will read this one a few more times (as I have the others in this short list) before I join Bonanza Jellybean.

My favorite Robbins book yet!

I love this author, he is funny and philosophical and just a great storyteller. Don't hesitate to read any of his books.

Brilliant

Poetically beautiful. Insightful. Provoking. Entertaining and timeless. Modern day classic. Tom Robbin uses creative wit to provide a story about humanity, philosophy, the sexes, relationships, our natural world, and our relationship with it.
Great performance. Loved every bit of it.

Fantastically Unusual

I listened to this entire book on a road trip across the country and it was the perfect fit for my trip. Thoughtful, humorous, weird, and sexy, this book will keep you entertained for hours. Robbins has a unique style of writing and tells a coming-of-age tale with quite a bit of charm. The writing begs to be listened to and Tom Robbins does a superb job narrating.
