    Story
    "The fall of the Shah"

Back in the 1970 and 1980s I read all of Clavell's books. He is a master story teller. The helicopter company in this book is one of the companies of The Noble House. You should read that book as well as Shogun and Tai-Pan. The story takes place in the 1970s in Iran during the fall of the Shah. His book Whirlwind in two volumns covers this story but this is a stand alone book and cover what happened to some of the people indepth. These people were on lightly touched upon in Whirlwind. This book is more about the Finnish pilot who had married the daughter of a Khan who ruled the boarder area of Iran and Azerbaijan. As a princess married to a foreigner, the radical islamic went after then and they had to escape to Turkey. The story briefly covers the escape of all the companies planes and people from Iran. Lots of action and suspense along with detailed account of what the country was like at that time. Clavell is one of those writer who has the ability to make you feel as if you are right in the middle of the action. He is one of the better historical fiction writiers. John Lee did an excellent job narrating the book. I suggest you would enjoy reading all of Clavell's work.

    "Escape"

Escape is actually a sub-plot that is written in James Clavell's much longer book, Whirlwind, which I had previously read. In spite of that, it is not an abridged version but is interesting and fast-paced enough to stand alone.

As always, the narrator, John Lee's facile use of so many foreign accents is amazing! His reading is inspired and gifted and he is certainly one of my favorite narrators.

    "Not Clavell's best"
Would you try another book from James Clavell and/or John Lee?

I am a huge fan of Clavell and also of John Lee's narration of other Clavell books.

Was Escape worth the listening time?

Fundamentally yes, but having read most of James Clavell's more epic works set in Asia, this one was not up to that standard. What I have always enjoyed about his major characters is their bred-in-the-bone instinct for survival in wildly perilous situations. These characters were the opposite: in wildly perilous circumstances, they did one fantastically dumb thing after the next, though they do this heroically. That makes for a much less interesting story than when characters survive by guile.

    "Enthralling experience"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Spectacular writing, by the reader John Lee is magically adept at creating a series of voices that create visual images so powerful that you believe your there... it was so good i couldn't stop listening, And maybe that's whats wrong with this...I truly had to hear it all at once.. Great team, James Clavell and John Lee... an entirely new medium.

My favorite used to be the old radio mystery theater, that however required an army of actors, voices and sounds... John Lee is like a one man army... it was even better

    Highly Recommend... 10 stars!

What did you like best about this story?

timely and real, i learned so much about a culture we hear and don't understand, a totally different way of thinking compared to western thought... gave me insights into the people i work with, and helped me gain a new respect for an ancient way of thinking

Have you listened to any of John Lee’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    first time, very impressed

If you could take any character from Escape out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Ericki, or probably smarter his wife...

    Any additional comments?
