Publisher's summary

Michael Hiebert’s remarkable debut novel tells the riveting story of a small Southern town haunted by tragedy, one brave woman’s struggle to put a troubling mystery to rest - and its impact on the sensitive boy who comes of age in the midst of it all.

Abe Teal wasn’t even born when Ruby Mae Vickers went missing 12 years ago. Few people in Alvin, Alabama, talk about the months spent looking for her, or about how Ruby Mae’s lifeless body was finally found beneath a willow tree. Even Abe’s mom, Leah, Alvin’s only detective, has avoided the subject. But now, another girl is missing.

14-year-old Mary Ann Dailey took the bus home from school as usual, then simply vanished. Townsfolk comb the dense forests and swampy creeks to no avail. Days later, Tiffany Michelle Yates disappears. Abe saw her only hours before, holding an ice cream cone and wearing a pink dress.

Observant and smart, Abe watches his mother battle small-town bureaucracy and old resentments, desperate to find both girls and quietly frantic for her own children’s safety. As the search takes on a terrifying urgency, Abe traverses the shifting ground between innocence and hard-won understanding, eager to know and yet fearing what will be revealed .

Dream with Little Angels is by turns lyrical, heartbreaking, and shocking - a brilliantly plotted novel of literary suspense and of the dark shadows, painful secrets, and uncompromising courage in one small town.

Decent mystery with out of place soapbox

This was my first Audible Plus listen. While I was hopeful in reading the description - small town mystery, point of view from child, I am not happy with the soapbox of racial justice included in the story. First, the story doesn't include any race issues so far. I am happy to listen to books set in a time where race issues were rampant, but the author seems to go out of his way to inject discussions of "that's racist!" into conversations between the main character and his mother when he is just asking questions or making observations. The book is about a missing girl. So an hour or so may go by when you think, okay, maybe the author got that off of his chest and it's a pretty good story...then BAM! Another lecture on racism. I know some people won't like my take on this. That's okay. Some books naturally address this topic, and I have listened to many of them and enjoyed them immensely. My complaint is that this book forces the issue to a point that it completely takes the story off track, making you feel like you had a rude commercial interruption that has nothing to do with the plot. I am about 2/3 of the way through. This is one I will "knock out," because I do want to know "who dunnit." But I will not read another book by this author, and I will probably only listen to the classics offered on Plus.

I would have to say this is one of the best reading I have found in a very long time. Great characters, story line and presentation!

An Unrealistic but Not Unreadable Story

The story or plot of this book is so far fetched from the real world that I spent alot of time rolling my eyes. The Detective is that only in name which is proven several times by her lack of detecting methods. The actions of the boy on the fence of childhood and young adulthood would land him in foster care and his mother (the detective) in jail. And the early teen girls "hard time" would have landed her on her butt by a true 1980 something Southern mother. Her antics were so far on the extreme side all the time they became filler or background noise. The only truly likeable and realistic one of the bunch was the Uncle. The book is not unreadable as long as you don't go into it expecting realism in comparison to the world as it was in the 80s. I wont read it again and won't go looking for the 2nd book in the Alvin, Alabama series.

Loved it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this so much! And absolutely loved the narration! The humor of the innocents of youth had me laughing out loud! Looking forward to other books!

Gripping

You'll never guess who done it. Author captures family dynamics beautifully. Book should have ended before the last 3 chapters. Good read.

Highly Recommend!

A well woven story with unexpected plot twists and gems of wisdom. I quickly became invested in all of the characters and laughed aloud in many parts. I was also brought to tears in other parts. This is a truly excellent, well-balanced, funny, and occasionally heartbreaking tale - from beginning to end. I'm not a fan of profanity in general, but its use in this story was perfectly placed & almost necessary.

This book made my eight hour car trip go by very quickly.....and the narrator is one of the best I've heard. Narration speed was set at 1.2 😊.

Note to readers who are victims of CSA....you may be triggered by this book. Still, it's important to be reminded that there are superb detectives everywhere who care deeply about protecting innocent children. Love to all who sacrifice to make this world a better & safer place.

Murder mystery and family morals in one neat package

There was strong character development, especially of the adolescent boys- Abe and Dewey. Foreshadowing of the murderer a little obvious, but not enough to spoil the story.

Finally a true Southern Accent!

This was a great story. I was never bored and I recommend the book.
About the Southern accent, there are some awesome books I just can't listen to due to the fact they all sound like Scarlett O'Hara on Valium!
I can't wait for book 2

So-so

Story was so-so. Left a lot of questions unanswered…probably aimed at teenage audiences.
