"Touching, funny, sexy and humane." (Publishers Weekly)
This was the first SEP book that I read and it's still one of my favorites. Touching, funny, all around great listen. I've recently converted my die hard Nora Roberts fan friends over to SEP and she's fallen in love too!
If you enjoyed Nobody's Baby but Mine then you will love this one. This is the story of Gabe (and Ethan.) Again, with all of Susan Elizabeth Phillips books the dialoge is funny and corny. The story is sweet and predictable but who doesn't like a good romance!
ONCE AGAIN SEP DOES NOT DISAPPOINT. I HAD READ THE BOOK AND DECIDED TO LISTEN ON TAPE AND ENJOYED IT SO MUCH. A NICE STORY ABOUT SECOND CHANCES! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
I loved Nobody's Baby But Mine and knew this book would be every bit as good. I wasn't disappointed. It has some humor but will pull at your heart too. I found the first time I listened to this - I went through a whole box of kleenex. I love the characters. I highly recommend if you want to hear see what happens to the Bonners after Cal and Jane's story.
It may have been because I was home sick for days - a captive audience - listening to this book, but I really enjoyed the characters. Even though some were hard to love at the beginning, their motives were well backed up. It was refreshing to have kids play a substantial role in the development of the plot - the author must have had or been around young kids at the time to get them so spot on. The dialogue drew me in scene after scene and the 'landscape' was unique. I even didn't mind the religious undertones. As with any novel older than a decade, there is a disconnect with descriptions of the fashions, but I worked with it. The 'bonus' romance worked to lighten the mood when it was needed. I'm rating based on the other books in the series by this author ( I have rated Outlander which is in another league with 5 stars but don't attempt to compare apples to oranges).
While listening to this book I realized how much I will miss Anna Fields narrating more books for us. She was very special. And SEP stories are always a winner.
I used to whistle while I worked. Now I read a book!
Oh, yes! Great story. I love the build up, between Rachel and Gabriel
Can't think of one off hand
I didn't like her portrayal of Rachel's son, too whiney
Made me cry in spots, Rachel really went through it, that was one strong woman.
This was the second book I've read by Phillips, I'm hooked!
Like many of SEP's books, the main characters in this novel, Rachel Stone & Gabe Bonner, come into each others lives with great deal of baggage. Both of them have been widowed, and the effects of loosing their spouses has very different yet equally devastating impacts on their lives. It made for an often emotional love story. Fortunately, Phillips' characters are so witty and funny that the emotionality is more than made up for with laugh out loud dialogue--both between the characters and in their own minds.
Although the main protagonists are Rachel & Gabe, an equally interesting (and perhaps more charming) sub-plot occurs between Ethan & Kristy. Like so many of Phillips' characters, Kristy has to undergo a--somewhat trashy--makeover to finally get Ethan's attention, but it ends up being worth it when she realized she's made those changes for herself and manages to make Ethan fall hopelessly in love with her.
As usual, Anna Fields' did a wonderful job narrating. Especially captivating was her depiction of the children's voices. It was absolutely adorable.
The only thing I didn't like about this story was the difficult relationship Gabe has with Rachel's son, just because it is sometimes difficult to believe that a single mother so interested in protecting her son would fall for a guy who has such a hard time even liking him. But in true SEP style, the story ends with the Gabe & Chip being as close & inseparable as any father & son.
Day dreaming book lover!
This is a fantastic listening experience. Susan Elizabeth Phillips really delivers in the contemporary romance genre. I have listened and read hundreds of romance books over the years and have found none better. I know when I finish this series, I will miss the Chicago Stars and will have to return to be a fan once again. Also, Anna Fields is one of the best narrators for Audible. She captures the dialog of the characters succinctly and you will become engrossed in the story and become part of it. The story is so touching that I know that you will enjoy it too. Don't hesitate on spending your precious credit here.
