Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Diana Gabaldon enchanted scores of fans with Outlander, her electrifying historical saga set in 18th-century Scotland. Now the sequel sweeps listeners back into the past as Claire relates more of her perilous sojourn there with her Scottish warrior husband, James Fraser. Twenty years after her strange journey back in time, Claire has returned to Scotland with her daughter, determined to share with her the secret she has harbored since her time travel. Still longing to know the fate of her beloved warrior, she recounts the story of her stay with him in the intrigue-ridden court of Charles Stuart and their attempt to avert the doomed Highlands uprising at Culloden. As her story unfolds, it reveals implications more far-reaching than even Claire could have guessed.

Narrator Davina Porter's gift for expression captures the history and flavor of a harsh place and time, and gives it the polish of a warm and engaging love story.

I ADORE this series!

I agree with all these glowing reviews, especially the reviewer who said they were in intense pain for Jamie and Claire! I cannot stop thinking about these characters---they are so compelling.
I thank Audiblebooks so much for my finding the Outlander series---I am obsessed.
This second book is absolutely wonderful as it moves back and forth through time. One of the author's brilliant writing touches is to present something---an event that a character tells, and then later reveal what really happened.
I have already started on the third book in the series and I don't want it to end! As I said, I'm obsessed.

Just enough history to love

One of the reviews for "Outlander" warned that this was a "romance novel" written "by women, for women" and as far as the "romance" part of it goes, I've found that to be true. But, I'm fascinated by history and have always loved speculation on things such as standing stones etc. I am also of scottish decent and have spent considerable time reading about and researching my heritage and I enjoy the slant that the author puts on highland history. For the most part I think she portrays everyday things about 18th century highland life very believably... er... other than the way the main character GOT to 18th century scotland... But even that is a fun idea.
So, yes, there is a lot of "romance novel" to wade through... but just enough history to keep me reading the series.

Unabridged only please

This series starts with Outlander when the main character Clare is in her 20s. The series continues in time and in the last one written to date she is in her 50s. It is hard to identify this series but is definitely a descriptive romance with a lot of adventure, with a touch of SciFi. My favorite books in this series so far are The Outlander and the next one called The Voyager. For all of you who loved Outlander the best is yet to come, just don't buy the unabridged. It is like listening to half of the story. Dragonfly In Amber is not the end of the story just setting up the future stories. Enjoy.

This is addictive

I am finding this series quite addictive. Initially, I found the beginning of this sequel to Outlander a bit slow. However, in her inimitable style, Diana Gabaldon hooked me again with this wonderful love story of Claire and Jamie Fraser. It seems that I will need to listen to the whole series now... I'm totally hooked. The only annoying thing was the accent of one or two of the characters. However, on the whole, I would say that Davina Porter has done an excellent job of narrating these stories.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

I listen to an average of 100 books a year, and the Outlander books are some of my most favorite! I find myself going back and listening (they have to be fantastic for me to want to re-listen) time and again. Davina Porter does a brilliant job with the narration!

Enjoyable sequel

I enjoyed the continued story of Claire. This story picks up nearly two decades later but ties in nicely with the previous story. While I enjoy the narrator very much, her take on Claire's daughter, an American, was very difficult to listen to because of the accent. I'm sure if you were not an American, it wouldn't be nearly as grating on the nerves. The author has a lovely writing style that paints a picture effortlessly but the constant switch in and out of first person is jarring and distracting. Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

A Series that will take you away

The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon is so well written and descriptive it will take you on one amazing adventure after another back in time and travels. I have read and reread and now have listened to all books and am on my second - (or is it third?) go round of listening. The performance by Davina Porter is beyond excellent. She has every accent perfected and changes from character to character seamlessly.

When my friend first invited me to try Outlander many years ago, I was a bit put off by the size of the book and my lack of free time to read. Once I began I never stopped and have gotten friends everywhere hooked on the series.

Do yourself a favor and get lost in a different world for a while.
