Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Diana Gabaldon enchanted scores of fans with Outlander, her electrifying historical saga set in 18th-century Scotland. Now the sequel sweeps listeners back into the past as Claire relates more of her perilous sojourn there with her Scottish warrior husband, James Fraser. Twenty years after her strange journey back in time, Claire has returned to Scotland with her daughter, determined to share with her the secret she has harbored since her time travel. Still longing to know the fate of her beloved warrior, she recounts the story of her stay with him in the intrigue-ridden court of Charles Stuart and their attempt to avert the doomed Highlands uprising at Culloden. As her story unfolds, it reveals implications more far-reaching than even Claire could have guessed.

Narrator Davina Porter's gift for expression captures the history and flavor of a harsh place and time, and gives it the polish of a warm and engaging love story.

Featured Article: Outlander Timeline Explained

There are eight audiobooks in the Outlander time travel series, with more planned. Most of the audiobooks are more than 30 hours long, which means the series covers a lot of story. And since the series follows Claire back and forth in time, and sometimes covers both her and Jamie’s timelines simultaneously, it’s a lot to keep track of when you’re listening. It’s almost as dizzying as time traveling yourself! Can’t keep the timeline of Outlander straight? Don’t worry, we’ve got the entire timeline explained, plus the rules on time travel in the popular series.

Excellent all around

Loved this book. It had mystery, love, adventure, and everything in between. Definitely one of those books I couldn’t put down and not think about, or count the minutes until I could resume listening again. What a wonderful narrator!!! Wow! Thank you.

Dragon in Amber

Excellent! From the beginning of the passion and events of this book, it leads the reader/listener through the intensity of the narrative , as the reader/listener anxiously and unexpectedly anticipates: " how this will end? "

Really good

This book is crazy long! Worth a credit and so frustratingly intriguing that I want to listen all the time, except I need to live, and I think about it a lot!! I enjoyed the book, didn't even mind the slow pace at times of characters thinking things thru. I will listen to the next one for sure and would recommend the first one to start with especially if you are into time travel and history. Well read and well written

I fell in love

as a fantasy novel adict, I didn't think I would enjoy this book as much as I did. to me a good novel needs magical people who do fantastical things, not every day kind of things that amount to major historical events. boy was I wrong...I was so captivated by the story I just couldn't put it down. I think this might be my new favorite series.

on a performance note, I think the narrator's American accent could use some work.

Great book. slow at times

the narrator was great. story was slow at times but overall interesting. I felt the romance between Clare and Jamie reached new heights and urged you to find out how their romance developed.

Captivating and Poignant but....

....it has a fabulous ending. This is the second in the series and of course you want to read them all in order, but warning - you know what's coming and there will be tears, but wait till the ending. My favorite character that Ms. Porter portrays is Jamie because he seems to have so many moods - you know what Claire is thinking cause Gabaldon writes from Claire's point of view. Ms. Porter also does a good job differentiating between the same accents and same sexes. I think I like her "girlie" Scottish accent the best, but they are all excellent. The story is fabulous and a must read after Outlander. I did cry through most of this, because the characters know what's coming, yet they all know their duty and know what they must do. Also the story doesn't get boring the second or third time through. II'm on my fourth - only because you don't catch a lot of details the first time through and Gabaldon refers to them later in books. IOW, the book is a page-turner; you can't wait to find out what's happening next and can easily glance over details that mean a great deal later - a picked up book here, the mention of a character there, and there is a LOT of background in this book that you will want to go back and listen to again. If you're using the Audible App, you can bookmark and easily navigate through chapters just as if you were reading a book.

I'm a history fan and love reading historical novels that grab you by the heart and make history come alive. I also love the personal stories of the main characters who aim to be "people of worth" and the struggles that entails.

Gripping

The author's word choice is always poignant and exquisite. Coupled with the skill of the narrator to express emotion and portray accents for different characters, the entire story is gripping from start to finish.
