Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Diana Gabaldon enchanted scores of fans with Outlander, her electrifying historical saga set in 18th-century Scotland. Now the sequel sweeps listeners back into the past as Claire relates more of her perilous sojourn there with her Scottish warrior husband, James Fraser. Twenty years after her strange journey back in time, Claire has returned to Scotland with her daughter, determined to share with her the secret she has harbored since her time travel. Still longing to know the fate of her beloved warrior, she recounts the story of her stay with him in the intrigue-ridden court of Charles Stuart and their attempt to avert the doomed Highlands uprising at Culloden. As her story unfolds, it reveals implications more far-reaching than even Claire could have guessed.

Narrator Davina Porter's gift for expression captures the history and flavor of a harsh place and time, and gives it the polish of a warm and engaging love story.

Love the series

I would recommend this book to everyone not just a chick read. I enjoy all the passion between Clair and Jamie.

Hooked on Historical Fiction

Diana is a meticulous reseacher. She pulls you in with the small things and before you know it she has you believing in and caring for her creation as much as she does. Don't let the book lengths intimidate you. It's part of what makes them beautiful & wraps you in their spell. Early on I made the mistake of getting too impatient. Abridged versions have their place but it isn't here. I went back for the unabridged versions and never did it again.

Davina Porter is one of the most versatile narrators I've had the pleasure to listen to. Authors who try to have a cohesive series read by different narrators can really end up with a muddle that ruins the story. Sometimes it can't be helped, but so many narrators in this situation can't be bothered to review what has gone before them. Ego? Making a story their own? Trying to change up the pronunciation of names and places once they're introduced is jarring. If you've ever returned a book because a new narrator seemed to be telling a completely different story, then you know what I'm trying to say. Diana & Davina got it right from the very first book and were lucky enough or smart enough to keep a good thing.

Unlike many recent series, each book in this one could stand on its own. How delightful and a big difference from what seems like buying a book a chapter at a time and having to wait on that chapter to boot. The wait for the next book in this series has been far more bearable and has kept me as an enthusiastic fan throughout.

Bottom line is I love this series. If the first book hadn't caught and held me, I would have missed a really great saga.

A Magnificent Sequal to Outlander

This is a worthy continuation of the lusty story begun in Outlander. You will love this sequel for all the same reasons you loved the original.

Prepare your heart for this

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, but with caution. If you read Outlander, take a break before starting this one since it's a big book, and the next one is too. You might want to continue immediately to book 3 after finishing this one, and it's a long time to commit. It doesn't start where you think it would. It doesn't end where you think it should, either. But keep reading, it'll be okay. Prepare your heart, because it's going to break, bad. Read fast, then make sure book 3 is on hand so you can move on quickly before the pain gets too much. I love this series so much! Diana Gabaldon is a genius!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Claire and Jamie, as always. But Fergus is growing on me, and Master Raymond was so intriguing, I want to know more of him.

Which character – as performed by Davina Porter – was your favorite?

Jamie. I can differentiate her voice and accent for Jamie now, althought the rest of the clan was Scottish too. Davina voiced Jamie with a warm tone that was both familiar and authorative

If you could take any character from Dragonfly in Amber out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Master Raymond. I want to know what's the deal with him.

Any additional comments?

Simply amazing. Such a beloved series,

Book vs. Audiobook

This book (along with its companions) by Diana Gabaldon is absolutely amazing. Beautiful imagery, endearing characters that you love even with their imperfections. The audiobook on the other hand... it’s still great, don’t get me wrong, but Davina Porter’s American English accent is so bad that it pulls me out of the story. I find myself repeating things she says trying to figure out the accent, but it’s just bad. Her English and Scottish accents on the other hand are wonderful. If story immersion is a deal breaker for you though, get the physical book and not the audiobook.
