Mortimer Moorecook, retired Wall Street raider, avid collector, is losing his fight against cancer. With weeks to live, a package arrives at the door of his hillside mansion—an artifact he paid millions for…a hominoid skull with elongated teeth, discovered in a farmer's field in the Romanian countryside. With Shanna, his beautiful research assistant looking on, he sinks the skull's razor sharp fangs into his neck, and immediately goes into convulsions.
A rural hospital. A slow night in the ER. Until Moorecook arrives strapped to a gurney, where he promptly codes and dies.
Four well-known horror authors pool their penchants for scares and thrills, and tackle one of the greatest of all legends, with each writer creating a unique character and following them through a vampire outbreak in a secluded hospital.
The goal was simple: write the most intense novel they possibly could. Which they did. A Word of Warning: Within this story, you will find no black capes, no satin-lined coffins, no brooding heartthrobs who want to talk about your feelings. Forget sunlight and stakes. Throw out your garlic and your crosses. This is the Anti-Twilight.

This one included every cliche known to horror/apocalytic novels and lots of gore but it was kind of a guilty pleasure for me. The narrator was excellent..some of his 'woman voices' made me want to grit my teeth for just a moment but he captured the over the top cowboy cop and the lumberjack characters really well and showed great talent in keeping the story moving. I just wish he'd done a few less 'squeeeak, squeeeak, squeeeeaks' in some places..kind of painful when you're wearing earbuds!
When the nurse was cornered in the closet with the children trying to keep the draculas from getting in and turning anymore of the children...
Nurse Jenny was my favorite.
I would have to say nurse Jenny because even though Dr. Lance was an ass she still maintained a gentle and lovable character.
The book was outstanding! I was not bored at any point! LOVED IT!!
Let me start by saying that this book was NOT a waste of my time. It entertained me and kept my attention on a long drive, and sometimes that's as much as you can ask from a book. It's action-packed from the start, with some fun new twists on the vampire legend.
However, the book could have been so much better. The writing is uneven at times, and the protagonists are two-dimensional, largely-unlikable characters.
Still, for fans of vampire (not Twilight or Anne Rice vampire) or zombie fiction, this book is a diverting romp.
Currently a local truck driver who has hours to listen to my audio books. I am hooked, some of my fellow drivers enjoy them also
Yes,but much later it leaves an impression
Deputy dog and the lumber jack they are good people weird but good hearted
Mr Dawe does a great job and keeps the story alive and moving at a very fast pace
No that is a great name for what else would you call it or them
A full speed ahead no hands barred fight to survive the night
"There never seems to be enough time in the day to do everything you want to do..."
I enjoyed the book. It would be a great movie. My only issue was the Narrator would be better suited to reading comedies than horror.
I loved the book and I'm enjoying the audio.
Don't know. I've read several Konrath/Kilborn books and have enjoyed them all. Still waiting on the other book that's in the works Werewolves.
Not bad. He did pretty good actually.
N/A, but I would love to see this made into a movie. Benny the clown was my favorite character.
I love to read but I have begun to enjoy listening s little bit more...I may 'read' another novel again but then again....
This book is probably the worst book I have ever tried to get through-as a matter of fact-I could'nt, and if you pick this one up to read be prepared to be astonished, of what? Well you just go ahead and give it a go-I dare you!
I was extremely disappointed in the choice of narration. When a book starts off with a warning about nightmares and terrifying details, you have a certain “tone” in mind from an audio perspective. This narrator sounds like he would be a better fit for a “Pride and Prodigious” type of novel.
I like the premises of the “Dracula” creature. It steps out of the typical duel-fang, pretty boy mentality that has hijacked the Vampire culture in recent years and gives back the terrifying creatures that I used to invasion as a kid.
Can’t say but it needs someone with a MUCH darker tone for sure.
The chainsaw lumberjack. The story is great upto the hospital breakout and then we get this mentally challenged “Hulk Smash” mentality. I was hoping for more build up and suspense, not Lennie from “Of Mice and men” .
The book itself seems good but I’m only 8-chapters in. Story line is a bit cheesy and its less of a thriller and more of a slasher so not what I was expecting. More than anything I was extremely disappointed in the choice of narration. When a book starts off with a warning about nightmares and terrifying details, you have a certain “tone” in mind from an audio perspective. This narrator sounds like he would be a better fit for a “Pride and Prodigious” type of novel. I’ll probably pick the book up as an eBook because I am a big F. Paul Wilson fan but I do not recommend the audio version.
None. I have always had an interest in this type of novel.
He has a good start. But it does not take off from the beginning.
The representations of the characters were fine. It is the characters and storyline that I found weak.
I couldn't get past the first chapter! I like my horror a bit more sophisticated than this. While listening I imagined it like an over the top horror/comedy. If you are scared by Scream, buy this audiobook by all means.
An exciting book that gets into the action straight away and keeps your interest throughout.
"Too much Blood and Guts"
Instead of a strong sorry and good deep characters, this book relies on loads and loads of blood and guts. Still, keeps you going till the very end but you are left wanting more information on the characters and story.
